Moab is beautiful, but it is in Utah. The OP is doing a 'Colorado' road trip.

See if Air Force Academy chapel is open—they were closed for repairs etc. Stunning. Also see Garden of the Gods. Both near Col Springs. South of Denver.

We just did road trip with photo club—Monte Vista area of San Luis Valley. Sangre de Cristo mts, sand dunes and Zapata Falls. Penitente Canyon (hike). Elephant Rocks.

See Wheeler Geologic if you can—need a jeep, maybe camping. Have not been there yet.

Colorado National Monument, Glenwood Canyon, Grand Junction.

Collegiate Peaks—lots of hot springs near Buena Vista and Salida.

Roxborough State Park south of Denver is well worth a half day hike or more.

The area around Crested Butte, especially the valley just to the north, is beautiful.

Two "Must See" places in Colorado (as sb mentioned above) are in the South-West part of the state.
Plan on two days, 1) to ride on the Durango-Silverton narrow gauge "Steam Engine" train and
explore it's museum. 2) about 1/2 hour away to see and photograph the "Cliff Dwellings" in the
Mesa Verde area. These 2 places were the highlight of a 4 state South West road trip my wife and I
did a few years back.

One of the most “Western scenic” road trips I ever took; From Grand Junction Co. to Arches National park via road 128 (which follows the Colorado river). Stay at Moab for the night, and then go back to Grand Junction by way of Paradox and Gateway Co. The return route through the hidden valley at Paradox is a great look at the rural west with many photo ops, after which you will drive from the junction of routes 90 and 141 to Gateway following the San Miguel and Dolores river canyons. This whole part of the return is a photo op and is one of those unsung scenic wonders. If the OP can’t fit it in, I hope that other readers can someday check it out.

Looking to plan a road/photo tour of Colorado in September, starting in Denver -- seeking places to see or skip, roads to take or avoid, number of days to spend where?

Western Colorado, rather than the East slope. Take 25 south from Denver and then 160 west at Walsenburg. Sand dunes, Mesa verde. And at Durango there is a narrow track RR that goes up to Silverton. Spectacular mountain scenery!

Canon City has the Royal Gorge just 8 miles West of town, the prison museum, dinosaur museum, great rafting excursions, Bishop's Castle nearby.

Stop by the USAF Academy, especially around the 11:30 - 12:30- time frame for the cadet parade at lunch (from the chapel plaza).

Concur with the Durango suggestion. Hit the Alpine Loop too. I'm typing this right now while looking at the La Plata snow covered mountains. I have some nice sunset shots from here I'll be posting soon.

The area around Aspen is fantastic. Southwestern Colorado around Durango is unbelievably beautiful - and you can ride on the Durango-Silverton narrow gauge railroad which is very cool!! Then head over to Mesa Verde NP for the cliff dwellings - like nowehere else. Denver also has a great zoo, by the way.

If you can climb, check out Hanging Lake. The path up is rocky, but care and walking sticks help. They are instituting a new crowd control system this summer (2018), but I think it won't be in effect in September.

It is worth the climb up. Take water and a picnic Lunch. Light is best in early morning and late afternoon as the canyon it is in opens to the south.
