Cany143, I'm sure glad you won't be visiting Telluride. But, for everyone else out there, a trip to Telluride as well as the rest of the San Juan Mountains is not to be missed in late September, early October. Unless of course you don't like friendly, welcoming and very hospitable Telluridians; not to mention the best fall foliage in Colorado. See attached images.
Have friends there and actually love the place.
It was my idea of Colorado when I headed west
as a naive young divorcee in the mid 70's. Have
4-wheeled, and hiked, most of the surrounding area.

As previously mentioned, ride the Durango-Silverton train, then drive U.S. 550 north. The drive on I-70 is one of the nicest highway drives anywhere. We spent the night in Vail, then drove to Colorado Springs on U.S. 24 through Leadville, which is very scenic. Don't miss the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. If you have time, the Air Force Academy is worth a visit.
