Not so fast. I use and have used Adobe products since 1998. I don't see a value to using dng - unless it is a short-term solution to a compatibility problem, like old version software support for new lenses and cameras - with the emphasis on temporary.

The biggest issue is that very little software outside of the world of Adobe supports dng, unless it is a native capture format for a camera - (Leica, Pentax, Hasselblad, to mention a few). If you keep the camera's raw files, there is nothing wrong with using dng, as long as you retain the original, uninterpreted data and metadata.

I’m in the same situation, and I’m moving to the new ON1 18.1. You can get a free thirty-day trial to see if you like it. I purchased it through an introductory offer for $69.00, and I’m amazed at some of the things it will do.
It will work as a stand-alone, or you can use it as a plug-in in your LR.

The latest version is pretty good - a far cry from the intial version initially released at the end of 2016. I've been using On One products since it was V7, and have enjoyed the progress the company has made and the partnerships they have formed to enable their long-term plan of being taken seriously as a professional tool - along with DXO, Lightroom and Capture One.

Contacted Adobe via chat to get an upgrade to my older version of Lightroom (Version 5.7.1) because I shoot RAW with a D850 now. Determined I need version 6.13 minimum. After nearly three hours on my day off and being bounced around from one person to another, at least six, none of whom had names I could pronounce, it ended with "that version has been discontinued". Sales kept pushing me towards the Cloud. NOT! There has to be another way? The only thing a cloud is good for is blocking the sun from shining! Grrrrrrrrrrr...................

For me the "other way" was Capture One. Pricy, but you get what you pay for.

Adobe fails to honor DNG's for older cameras when you get a new computer. How nice they are! Studio, and Affinity work well for raw. Or go thru cameras brand to open RAW.

Fully agree. When I typed "nothing" I was assuming the question was about using DNG Converter to avoid update spending on Adobe software. Some, after spending thousands for a new camera, absolutely detest the Adobe update "tax".

For the record, I don't convert RAWs to DNGs in my system.

That's confusing. What older cameras are not honored?

What is missing from this list of supported cameras: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

I agree the $10.00 doesn't sound bad if you are from the USA but in Canada that is about $14.00 a month. I am trying out trail version. I have had no luck getting a simple answer from Adobe my old version of light room has Tethered capture. They say CC should have not in the trail version. I do agree it would be nice to have software that is up to date all the time. I have Luminar 2018 it is good and wouldn't even consider lightroom if Luminar had a way to manage photos. Thanks Rob

Agreed. Not sure why everyone freaks out over $10/mo. When I purchased stand alone, it cost me more annually than CC does.

If you are writing about Canon, they are on the list of supported cameras. Are you having trouble getting Adobe software to work for you with those cameras?

"no luck getting a simple answer from Adobe"

Here is a list of the supported Nikon, Canon and Leica cameras that can be tethered: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/tethered-camera-support.html

If that doesn't get you the answer you want, try posting a question on the Adobe user forum: https://forums.adobe.com/community/lightroom/lightroom-classic-cc

I have a Nikon D800 and D300s both are supported. Problem is if you look under file on other lightroom they have tethered capture on lightroom cc it has nothing not sure if that is because of trial version or not. I will post on Adobe form.
Thanks for your help

Adobe just recently added “camera raw” which has the same functions as Lightroom to Photoshop Elements, which you can own for $99. It’s bjndled with Premiere elements for movies. That’s a pretty good deal.
