I will be in Amsterdam in April and hope to to shoot tulips, windmills and the red light district (not necessarily in that order). I am planning to shoot primarily stills. I can bring either a Sony RX 10 iv and call it a day or pack a Canon 80D with any of the following lenses EF-S 10-18, 24, 18-135 and EF L 24-105, 70-200.

Suggestions or thought?

If you can only take one the 18-135. If two then the EF-S 10-18 and the EF L 24-105. It would be nice to take the 70-200 for more compressed shots of fields of tulips. The 24 pancake would be nice in town for street shots. I did take my camera to the red light district for "architectural" shots. You do need to be discrete.

How do you transport your gear? Why not take it all and only carry what you need for the day?

Take the Canon with 18-135. There is a hop-on-hop-off trolley with daily passes that circles the canal area (both directions) from the train station and is a great way to move around the city. Of course, the windmills don’t tend to be in the city but there are great museums.

I, too , have been to Amsterdam in the spring a number of times. First, I would suggest late April or early May to on the average get the maximum number of blooms. I would lean also toward the Canon with the 24-105 but would also take the wide angle for getting the vast blooming fields outside Amsterdam. I would not walk through the Red Light district but it is easy to get a taxi and have him stop here and there to photo the "window dressing".

Sony RX 10 IV, travel light and with that camera you'll get amazing photos...at Keukenhof all you'll need is a wide angle primarily for close ups, the millions of tulips are amazing. Enjoy

We’ve been there a couple of times fairly recently. I took way too much photo gear with me. If I had to choosefrom the gear you listed, I’d take the Sony. If you have a good P&S, take that as a back up. If you are going to Kinderdijk to see the windmills there, your Sony will serve you well. I think you’ll find the zoom to be very helpful in framing your shots. The windmills on that site had been moved there from other locations in The Netherlands, and have been arranged as a sort of open-air museum. You’ll want to be able to frame most of your shots there so you are not including unsanted elements in your shot.

One note of caution, we were warned that it is not a good idea to photograph the windows in the Red Light District. We were told by locals we know and trust that there had been instances of tourists photographing there and having there cameras thrown into the nearest canal. Don’t know if it’s true or not, but I used my little P&S to get those shots.

I think you will enjoy Amsterdam and The Netherlands in general. It is a beautiful country with friendly and helpful residents.

I took my canon 5d mark 3 with 16x35 2.8. This pic is from on top of a trash can overlooking a canal in Amsterdam, HDR 3 images (1/8 second) Whatever camera you bring, a small tripod (micro) is essential. There is so much to photograph especially the water at night.

Have a great trip.

I agree with the above commenter, NO pics at the Red Light District. Also, 1 only brought 1 lens, wide angle zoom.

For Amsterdam you need to have a wide angle lens, your 24mm should work for almost everything in the city. (I one time got some great shots with a fisheye!) if you go to see the Tulips I recommend the Keukenhof Gardens which show a large variety of Tulips, there you would want something like an 85mm or a 105mm macro... (You will want a macro for the tulips). So I would go with your Canon bring your 24 for the city and your 24 - 105 for the Tulips (however you are still missing a macro, which I would consider borrowing)

Tried taking some pictures in the red light district - which was not easy. They dont want pictures taken. Even with long zooms taking a picture from across the street. Dont do it - some of these people are real goons and I heard they sometimes send someone out to grab your camera and smash it if they have seen you taking pictures of any of the girls.

For those that might think mark jay is kidding, I can tell you he is not. The RL district is carefully controlled, and not by the police!

You can take pics of the area in general. Canals are nice. old kirk (church) is there. Just no windows and the girls - at all!

Thanks for the warning. I’m leaning towards the 80D with the 10-18, the 24 prime and the 24-105.

Thanks to everyone for their .02

Its a great city to take photos. The cyclists are a very good subject. On the roads you get pedestrians, cars ,buses and cyclists all going their own way on the same piece of road , sheer pandemonium. The cyclists use standard street bikes and tend to wear little or no protection . The buses do not stop or slow down for anyone. Great photo would be the terrified face of a cyclist as a bus bears down on them . never got one yet.

The canals are also a good subject. The street life is great, its a very vibrant city. Be cautius about the coffee shops , some sell other "stuff" as well. My wife and I had a couple of coffees while siting outside a coffee shop and just the fumes made us a bit tipsy.

Whatever happens you will have a great time .
