I will be in Amsterdam in April and hope to to shoot tulips, windmills and the red light district (not necessarily in that order). I am planning to shoot primarily stills. I can bring either a Sony RX 10 iv and call it a day or pack a Canon 80D with any of the following lenses EF-S 10-18, 24, 18-135 and EF L 24-105, 70-200.

Suggestions or thought?

Take the one you with which you are most familiar and can produce the best images, with images being the most important.

Take the Sony. BTW, never put your camera in your trunk and then leave. Number of years ago, someone saw me do that just before I visited the Anne Frank house and when I came back they had broken into the truck and taken everything - be cautious!

Thank you, perhaps that would be my Kodak Instamatic!

If it were me Amsterdam would be a once in a lifetime experience so I would take the best, my Canon 80D with my 24-105 L IS II.

👍

Have to say that, having visited Amstadam and the Netherlands many times, I’m on the same page as another poster; I’d be very comfortable with your 80D and just that 24-105 lens... and if I wasn’t comfortable, I’d spend some time training to capture a variety of street, close-ups, architecture, water life, and flat field landscape shots. 😉

Bring the Wide 10-18 lens on the canon and your Sony RX 10 iv.
DO NOT take photos in the Red Light District unless you want your camera thrown into the canal.
Also look up the Double Tree (by Hilton) and checkout the rooftop bar where you can watch the city light up at night.

I was in Amsterdam last month.
Tried taking some pictures in the red light district - which was not easy. They dont want pictures taken. Even with long zooms taking a picture from across the street. Dont do it - some of these people are real goons and I heard they sometimes send someone out to grab your camera and smash it if they have seen you taking pictures of any of the girls.

If it was me, and it's not, I would have to have as wide a lens as possible so I could get really close to those flowers and still have the windmills in the background. So, for me, I would take the 10-18 and the 18-135. I don't think the Sony would be wide enough for me.

For the 80D, I suggest the combo of 10-18 & 18-135. I was there 2 years ago and both will have to be used

Make sure you have a reasonably long lens for the tulips and the distant windmills. For the city, I would use a wide angle. When in the red light district, you need to be very discreet with your camera - smaller is better - as the ladies don't like it...

I just got back from Amsterdam, having visited and shot all the places you mention. I used my Canon 7D m2 and a Tamron 18-400 lens almost exclusively and am quite pleased with my results.

I prefer to travel light, with a small camera and one lens. If the trip is specifically for photography, then bring it all.
