I have been using Canon printers for many years and should never have used non OEM ink. This is the second printer I've had to replace because non OEM ink ruined the print head (I'm a slow learner). I researched how to clean the print head and followed all the instructions and now a printed page comes out in PINK type! The black ink tanks are full, although the colors are low, so that doesn't explain why it doesn't print text in black. I ordered one set of Canon ink for a last ditch effort to resurrect this $60 printer.

I already have a Canon Pro 10 dedicated to picture printing, although I may occasionally print a picture on the all in one.

That being said, I could be swayed to switch brands for my office work printer. It needs to scan, copy, & print and not put me in the poor house buying ink!! I've even considered a color laser printer. Replacement toner cartridges cost more than the printer, but that is true for ink jet printers too. The difference is the number of times they need to be changed for best results.

I've looked at so many options that my head is spinning and would really like to hear what you all like.

Canon for photos using Canon Ink still working with an IP4500, Brother MFC for everything else, BTW using aftermarket ink, much less expensive, brand of ink on request, Bob.

About 12 years ago I had an Epson wide carriage printer that I used fake ink in it. Ruined the head. Not Epson's fault but a five years later when looking for a wide printer I chose Canon. I only use OEM ink no matter how tempting the price of garbage ink is. When Epson stopped supporting another all in one printer with OEM ink I tossed the printer and bought an upgraded one.

I'm quite pleased with my Envy as well. Rugged. Traveled with us in the fifth wheel RV across the country and back.

Canon MX870. All in one. Scan, copy, print documents and the occasional photo with good quality. Does envelopes can be used wireless and has a document feeder for up to 35 pages. You can plug media cards directly into it and it can even fax! (Fax...what's that?)
Ink is not that pricey.
It has been a slave of mine for 5 years now without a problem.

I use Epson but ran into the problem of clogged print heads with generic ink. Most Epson printers I believe don't have removable print heads so cleaning is more difficult. In most other brands if you remove the heads they can be cleaned with a 50:50 mix of distilled water & ammonia but make sure its not ammonia plus other ingredients, just the pure ammonia.

"There have been several recommendations for the Canon Pixma 922. I have one and also recommend it. It has never caused me any problems. For an all in one printer, which the OP asked about, the photo quality is surprisingly good, not full professional quality but not too far off."

I agree with the above statement, I have one and also recommend it. I use LD ink and never had any problems.

I have a Canon MG6120 and it does a great job printing photos, scanning, copying, etc. HOWEVER...a common complaint is that it sucks cartridges dry overnight. Thanks to UHH advice, I found out that's because it uses a lot of ink for the calibration & cleaning process every time you turn it on. The solution? Just leave it on. It goes into a sleep mode when not in use so it uses minimal electricity and I find the ink cartridges last much, much longer.

I experienced the same problem with my Epson SureColor P600. The printer's print head (not the ctg) would not print several ctg colors. All the King's Men (Epson Tech Support) could solve the problem. Answer, replace the printer's print head for $500 to $600 after mailing off to another city. Probable reason was not using the printer more often. The happy solution was that I purchased the printer with my Costco Visa that extended the mfg's warranty by one year. They paid for a new P600 printer and I trashed the old one. Now I print a nozzle check every two weeks. Hope this works.

It appears I'm in the brand minority here, but I'm in year 6 with an HP Officejet Pro 8600+, which has given superb service as a printer, copier and scanner, all double sided if you want it. (It supposedly does fax, too, but I haven't been able to make that work through my Uverse gateway.) The current version appears to be the 8710.

Barely a hundred bucks a Amazon, although a set of replacement inks, including a high capacity black cart, will cost about as much.

I have used Epson printers since they were 8-pin dot matrix. I have an all-in-one that we plugged in almost a year ago and have not turned off since. It just sits there and prints great or scans very well when asked. Just have nothing bad to say about Epson.

I discovered that I was "hurting" my printer by leaving it on. That seemed to have clogged the heads and make it very difficult to clean and get it working. After using up too much ink trying to clean the nozzles, I wrote to Epson and discovered that turning off the machine physically, protects the nozzles. Since I learned that, I have far less trouble. My printer is old and out dated, but i find i really don't use it enough to warrant replacement. As long as someone carries the cartridges, and the thing still works when needed, that is all I care about. if I wanted a really high quality print, I'd haveit done commercially anyway. I use a Brother B & W laser printer for my regular printing needs.

I've had both HP and Canon all-in-ones over the years. All of them worked very well, but more importantly, both have had excellent phone support. That's worth at least as much as the quality of their products. I would suggest researching the quality of the support provided by the manufacturer of any model you consider purchasing. Otherwise, you will have an expensive paperweight when it doesn't work as needed.

Epson, and I believe others now, make some printers that use pour-in ink that is very reasonable (about $12 a color) in their EcoTank line. Cost a few bucks more upfront, but BIG ink savings. I have an ET-4550 and it does a good job for everything except making photos. Best of luck.
