Has anyone heard any rumors that Nikon may be releasing the next Pro DSLR Body?
I am about to purchase a D5 and I don't want to see a D6 on the market in 3 months.

Just a thought....Nikon has a whole line based on the D5 including the D850 and the D500. Nikon can't even fill the orders they have now for the D850. I doubt that they'd upgrade the D5, which would signal an upgrade for the D850 and cutoff those orders. For this reason I think you're safe. The Expeed 5 and the autofocus system of the D5 is fairly new.

D6 is at LEAST 2 years away. But a D5S could appear as early as this summer. Next up will likely be a D760 or even possibly a full frame mirrorless design.

From the rumors I've found, they are skipping the D6. Actually, it's more like scrapping the D6 step, as the improvements on the model to be released after the D6 came along quite well. FX sensor with 53MP color mode selectable modified CMOS-v. Apparently, a lot of copy/print houses were requesting a native CYMK RAW compatible output, as opposed to converting an RGB capture. It's also going to feature a voice actuated assistant, currently named Nikki. This assistant will be able to answer questions regarding settings, composition, point of focus, etc. The communication, which is satellite based, is intended to use the built in speaker, or can be used through iPhone earbuds and mic, for more private guidance. The camera also features a color analyzer which will detect the type of light and automatically set WB programmatically. The sensor is divided into segmented regions for WB. This will allow the regions of the scene to be individually balanced depending on the color temperature of the light source illuminating that portion of the scene which is projected onto a sensor segment.

Additionally, and this is still not clear, the camera will also suggest the appropriate lens to use based on its onboard subject analysis software. The rumor also has it that the camera will be priced in the range of USD $8,000-$8500. Of course, they are also co-releasing a compliment of lenses specifically designed for the new sensor. Due to its dual usage now as photographic and graphic, lenses will have specific coatings for the intended end use of the camera. The anticipated date of release is supposed to be later this year, in time for Christmas.

WOW - that's along way from the Instamatic.
I guess I am safe, as I don't see myself having that much to drop on a body that will also require investing in a new set of lenses.

Your projected release date has been pushed off at least 6 months. They still can't get it to make a good cup of coffee. That's a deal breaker for me and a lot of others who like to shoot in early morning light.

Jack, the old lenses will still work. It's just the new lenses will be optically "tuned" to optimize how they work with the new sensor. From what I read, the camera can detect the lens attached, as it does now, but "tune" the sensor's output to optimize the lens-sensor pairing. The new lenses will be more straight through passage of the data collected to the new inline image processor chip.

Actually, there is a mixing board incorporated in the menus. The only complaint they've had with the prototype is that the back screen is a bit small and the adjustments are not as fine as the marketing dept. would like.
