I'd like to share something with you that really made my day yesterday. I've mentioned before on UHH that my granddaughter is studying photography and that I had given her my old E3 Rolleiflex 2.8 Planar and other stuff. Yesterday she sent me this text: "I'm at a photo conference in Philly called SPE and I've been wearing your rollei all around. Everyone's so in love with it - lol - and it's been an easy way to start conversations and get a bunch of free stuff, so thank you."'

I reminded her that it is now her camera, not mine, and that most "old timers" would recognize it. She went on to say: "Yeah and even young kids are all into it and have asked questions about it. I tell everyone how it was yours and how it's my baby now. Also, the dudes at Ilford gave me 11 rolls of free film and Kodak gave me one as well so that was really cool of them."

She is very creative and has made some very nice images with this old camera.

Proud Grandpa.

Grandpa and granddaughter / grandson relationships are great. I sure treasure mine. So much knowledge and love to pass on and be received with appreciation. Your story was a perfect example.

I'm waiting for my promotion to Great (the only way I'll ever be) too. Good on The Ilford and Kodak folks!

A TLR to an excellent way to learn to actually see without distraction. And I LOVED those BIG Negatives! And it is STILL Kool to be SQUARE!

Thanks Photocraig. I agree, and the C330 with its bellows focus and paramender is surprisingly good for macro images.

What a wonderful story, Jack. Wish I could give her a hug for being such a loving granddaughter. Most kids nowadays want nothing to do with us old timers. Please post some of her photos, if she's willing to share with us!

Thanks for your nice comments Judi, I appreciate them. I also have a grandson who has a small rock band. I love to photograph his concerts, usually in small, dark and badly lit bars. It's a challenge. I usually take 800-1000 shots and try to edit them down to about 25 for PP work.

That Rollei will always be yours, in your granddaughter's mind. It's meant in a respectful and fond way, as I have an oak secretary that once belonged to my great-grandfather, that I think of as "Grampa Hindal's oak secretary." He's been dead long since before I was born, and I'm 57. I never knew him, yet, there's that kinship.
I think you have a wonderful grandfather-granddaughter relationship. Congratulations!

Wow, I hadn't thought of it like that Susan. It's comforting to think that something like that could keep someone in their thoughts long after we're gone.

Thanks erickter. Never get to spend as much time with them as we'd like after they have grown up, and I'm afraid she will be moving to the Northeast after she graduates from her local school. If so, will really miss her but it'll be a good reason to travel more to Oregon.

Thanks GAS496. I think film is very popular with her classmates. I've done a little work with her in my darkroom, but her school has multiple darkrooms and she does nearly all her work there. She has a nice DSLR but doesn't use it as much.

I have been continually enrolled in a community college photo class since 2002. Not missed a semester yet. Been shooting film exclusively the entire time.

The main reason I have been taking the same class over and over all the years besides the great professor teaching the class is the interaction with the younger students and their enthusiasm and creativity are a great inspiration to me. Many have stayed on over the years too. Let’s hope she continues with her love of the medium and goes on to a college with a good photography department like Scottsdale Community College here in Arizona.

I can only hope one of my grandchildren grow up and want to inherit my equipment and love of photography as your granddaughter. You are a lucky man to have this to share with her.

I too have noticed that the younger generations often seem to have more enthusiasm and creativity than some of us older farts. She has been doing some of the very older processes such as tin types. I still have a nice Wisner Technical 4x5 outfit that I'm hoping she will want some day.
