I have had trouble getting the computer to start because I had a card in the reader. Comes up as a non system disc error. Remove reader and starts.

The problem may not be your card reader. Vista has a rep for being the worst OS monkysoft ever came out with. It has proven to even be worse than ME. Infact, since it came out and up untill " Chicago " 7, I spent lots of time removing it from customer's computers and installing Xp pro. MS just announced a deal where you will be able to get Win 8 for $ 40 till 12/31/13. A heck of a better deal when the Vista up-grade cost $ 140 !!! The consumer up-grade will start in Oct., the last I heard.
Vista is fine, it was straightened out. Still have Vista around here. People forget XP had problems out of the gate, too.
I wouldn't be too quick to get Win 8.

Your computer could be trying to boot up from the card. Might have to go into BIOS and change boot up menu.
Your hard drive might be failing, run diagnostics.
It did fail. Have new computer now. ACER with windows 7

Congrats.... yea, Vista has killed a lot of computers, but there are those that still use it.
I bought the same card reader from B&H. Love it.I have SD and CF that I use with it and haven't had a problem. I got a card reader cheap on ebay, waste of money.

My built in SD card reader was getting flaky so I bought a cheap all in one external reader and plugged it into a USB port. Works great and it also works with my laptop with no card readers.
on a humorous note I read the title of this post and my mind drifted back to when card readers were just that, they read punch cards. Having worked on "card readers" Does that give my age away?
I had the same problem windows xp needs a minimum of 2 gig memory. Windows 7 is 4 gig of memory
Appel mac which i use is 4 as well good luck
