I am looking for a 10-18mm F3.5 lens for a Canon. I want to take images of stage plays. My question is, does anyone have a preference between Sigma or Tamron? Thanks.

The only good answer will come from people who test lenses for a living.

I tend to use the lenses made by the camera I own, in this case Nikon. I am not saying that independent lenses are not good.
Canon has the 10-18 f3.5-5.6 lens at a reasonable price.

Hi Mike! I cannot help directly regarding Tamron vs Sigma on this particular lens, but can say I have the Canon 10-18 lens made for the Canon crop models and it is a very sharp lens, especially from approx 12mm through 18mm. I have never owned a Sigma lens but do have a couple of Tamrons which are quite good in my opinion.

Sigma vs Tamron? Read all day long and the results will be +- +- +- and final results 50-50. The best decision might be to by good used lens at the best price from someone like B&H Photo or Adorama. I have more concerns over the 10-18 mm. I am making an assumption that you can't get back to far so you need this wide angle lens. If you are that close you probably will be getting side distortion that is objectionable for people. I would suggest somehow getting back further and using another choice of lens like a 24-70 mm. Another thing to think about is don't worry about getting the whole stage on each shot. Just be shooting the main players in the present scene. As you keep shooting throughout the play you more than likely will have all the players sooner or later. You might only need a couple of shots of the whole stage. Hope this gives you a little more to think about. We have a little theater here in our small town called the Granbury Opera House and my good friend shoots all the plays and this is how he goes about shooting the performances.

My best theatrical shots are created at the dress rehearsals. I get on the stage, move in close, and repeat peak action moments, often adding weak fill lighting, and frame for the best compositions with greatest emotional impact.

Neither. Tokina 11-16 or 11-20 in the range you mention.

I have to assume you are shooting at the request of the production, otherwise the choice of lens would not make much sense. But a few questions first:

What camera body are you using?

What other lenses do you have available?

Are you shooting during a live show, a dress or tech rehearsal, or are you shooting a range throughout the rehearsal process?

Sigma has just announced a 14-24 f/2.8 that should be in the $1000 price range.
Consequently, they've reduced the price of their 10-20 mm f/3.5 to $400

Tamron's SP 15-30 f/2.8 looks really interesting for $850

Both are excellent manufacturers. If it was me, based on my experience with recent purchased, I'd go for the Tamron.

My 2 cents worth: Having seen a lot of reviews pitting this or that lens against the other in general of course the Canon lens would be best. But the trend seems that Tamron especially G2's do slightly better on Canon bodies and Sigma does slightly better on Nikon bodies when the reviewer has done side by side comparisons I have no numbers to back this up it's just a trend I have noticed
