I just bought a new 27” iMac from Best Buy--$1699. I only bought it because the hard drive in my old,old 21” was dying. The 21” did just fine for me for photo editing, etc. I’d have purchased another one and been happy, but my wife said to go for the big guy, so I did. The 21’s are going for about 1200-1400.

I have an iMac 2011 in my other home that has worked flawlessly. I just purchased another 2011 iMac for my 2nd home (It was the last model with a built in dvd, that I use).
It was refurbished by "isellmac" on eBay for ~$400. 60 day warranty. I am very pleased with it.

My Imac, circa 2011, finally has given up the ghost. The internal drive crashed years ago and I have been booting from an external drive. It is (was) a 21.5 display. I really loved it. I knew it would die and pass on soon, so, I knew I better get a new computer soon.

18 months ago then, I purchased a Lenovo touch screen desktop that I thought would be a good computer. It is okay. Has a decent processor, 8 mg memory, (not enough) and 1tb internal drive. I do have back up drives. I never use the touch screen. The display is okay but really does not give a good reproduction of what I am doing in my photo editing.
I was using both the Imac and Lenovo for different tasks.

So I am thinking of purchasing a new Imac. Features have really expanded since I last researched them.
Do I need a 27 inch display?
All basic models come with 8mg but I will upgrade to 16.
Processor speed? Do I really need something terribly fast if all I am using is Photoshop or LR?
Some models come with retina display. Is that really an advantage?
Most of my photos are exported to Smug or Nikon Image Space. My printer is limited (currently) to 11.5 x 8, unless I send out for printing to a commercial lab.
I prefer to print in B&W.
What recommendations would you suggest for a computer.
My budget needs to be less than $1500.

Honestly, you can't do it in your budget. Not Apple. Some have given examples, but they start $150 over budget and do not include your requested 16G RAM. In your price range, a Dell Outlet Inspiron machine with 16G, 128G SSD (for programs), a 1T hard drive, 2G on the graphics card and a 28" 4K monitor will come in around $1300.00 or less (they always have coupon codes in the "deals" tab)

I have a 2016 27' iMac . I to have a Lenovo fancy desktop touch screen. The 27' iMac beats the pants off of my Lenovo. Go for the 27' and Retina Diplay. Take your SD card to the store and compare your image on the computers of your choice. As for memory and ram get what you can afford. It can always be upgraded. I have 8 ram and 1 T hard drive. It does fine. I will admit that it does slow up a bit when I am messing with 42MP images vs 24MP images. But I am retired and have time, not money. Happy shooting

Strictly no you don't need 27" , but it's a lot easier to upgrade the ram on a 27" iMac than a smaller model later. Your going to be working with that screen for years, anything less will just be cause for regret later. As long as you are not putting it on a credit card a 27" iMac will be a nice piece of kit to have and you will enjoy working with it.

I have to agree with Black.... spend a few more bucks and go 27". This is what YOU will be looking at for at least 3 years hopefully. Get your memory on at least (2) 8 GB cards... then you can easily upgrade to 32 in the future with the 2 available slots; A 27" just makes the experience that much more enjoyable.

I would go the iMac route. If you can afford it, a 27" 5K retina I7 with a 512GB SSD. More, or less, as $$ allows. Best of luck.
