What has been your paradise, so far?

I didn’t mean to baffle anyone. Let me explain. I went to Alaska hoping to shoot landscapes and wildlife. The landscapes I found were beautiful but beautiful with a high degree of redundancy. I now refer to my very expensive—I rented an RV and spent 6 weeks in the state—trip as “the mountains and clouds tour.” As for the wildlife, that involves paying for guided tours. I went there with the notion that bears and moose outnumbered people. They don’t. I never saw a bear or moose. I’ve talked with friends who loved Alaska. Me, not so much.

Probably should have done a little more research before blowing the wad.

Although we have done some traveling outside of my home state of Arkansas (Yellowstone in winter and summer, Alaska, Caribbean, Mexico, Canada), my absolute favorite place to photograph is the back roads of Arkansas! We are 45 minutes from the mighty Mississippi River, 1 hour from the Ozark Mountain foothills, and have delta farm ground surrounding us. We live on a narrow ridge of hills called Crowley's Ridge, where there is abundant wildlife and beautiful scenery. In a half hour (depending on the season), I can be on location where there are eagles, migrating waterfowl, and see deer and other critters almost any day.

oh, that’s a very long story, involving an old friend who lives in Alaska and sold me on the idea of making the trip. I’ll quit there, but suffice it to say I was disappointed. One other point: look at the photos that come out of most (not all, but most) trips to Alaska. “Mountains and clouds....”

Alaska is my top choice. Spent 30 days in spring/summer, drove our car. Katmai is WOW, as is Kenai Fjords and Tracy arm. The road north out of Valdez, oh my! State Parks at Haines, then there is the Stikine River, Moose in Homer. 2 1/2 weeks in winter: Coldfoot/Brooks Mountain Range, and soooo much more! Misty Fjords, Hwy going north of Haines, Alaska going thru Canada's Kluane NP). Canadian Rockies! Glacier NP, USA, Yellowstone, Rocky Mountains, Oregon/Washington. Utah, California, New England, Smokies, Theodore Roosevelt NP. Some of my favorites are locally, in Arkansas. Come to think of it, just about everywhere I have been has been photographically interesting, lol. But still my favorite was Alaska! So much more to see....

From So. California. Much to see here. I drive 4 hours in any direction and have mountains, rivers, lakes, beaches, desert and metropolitan (people). One of our favorite places to visit and shoot photos is Virginia City, Nevada and Carson Valley, Nevada. It is unique during the winter and summer in those locations.

definitely southern Utah and northern Arizona is my favorite area, but throw in NM, AZ, UT, CO, WY, MT, NV, and KY, and most of my bases are covered.

To each his own. "Mountains and clouds..." Very boring indeed. It's nice to know there will be one less person to worry about getting in the way of my mountain and cloud images.

No place like home.

"Home" is often under-rated because it is so familiar. But there are so many photographic opportunities no matter where you are. I live in Vermont [Lucky Me!] and explore back roads near where I live. I also take trips to different places in the state. One of my favorites thus far has been Lake Willoughby in the Northeast Kingdom. Not only because the lake itself is very photogenic, but also because there are other places to explore within a reasonable driving distance. We returned to the area last spring to go to Willoughby Falls [on the Willoughby River] to see the trout from the lake leaping up the falls to get to their spawning grounds. It is the biggest spring spectator sport in the area! People gather on the rocks by the falls to watch. We also were at the Stone House where there is a hilltop viewing stand from which we could see Lake Memphremagog.

We have been to a lot of other places, and I have loved taking pictures at all of them. But the places where you can return again are so great because you learn your way around and find something new every time! We used to visit my aunt in Maine [Down East!], and got to know her area. Also have some great photos from Portland, Maine where I go for a conference in the fall. Love the lighthouses and harbors in Maine.

But just looking out my front door or back door is where I have gotten so many photos of wildlife around my home! I guess the point is, never under-estimate the area where you live just because it is not exotic!

I was surprised that nobody so far has mentioned the Columbia River Gorge, I also like the Great Circle of Southern Utah and Northern Arizona.

Thank you Doug! My wife and I went to Alaska this summer for the first time. Did the cruise and the Denali train ride. It was superb. With your info we can plan a road trip and take in more of that beautiful State! What a blessing to have that part of the world in the U.S.
