Red Admiral Butterflies

I'm very fond of these butterflies and don't seem to see quite as many of them as some other species, so was very happy to capture these. I also have a few images with their wings completely closed, but I don't think they are quite as attractive in that position. All images were taken on July 22nd of last year around six pm!

Beautiful, Corky! We don't get those around here... at least I've never seen any.

Thanks, Carol and one book that I referred to showed them almost everywhere in the USA and all the way down through Florida, but does say in some areas that they can be spotty so keep an eye out for them. I will include an image of one with is wings folded together just in case you happen to see one in that position. Also, the book says that even though they are called Admirals they really don't belong in that family, but instead in the same family as the Ladies which also include the Buckeyes! Also, sometimes the red hardly shows at all with it's wings folded as below!

I'll watch closer. I saw a lot of Buckeyes at the coast and never see them inland. Maybe I'll figure out where these guys hang out. In late February my sister and I are going to Gainesville to the University of Florida butterfly garden. Bet I'll see them there!

Thanks, Bill and although one of my ID books shows their range across the entire USA, I think that they are not that common in many areas.
