I hate them!
Me too... Make sure you put plenty of low temp automotive waterproof grease to the pole and it really helps as well as provides some funny videos.
Tree Rats is what I call them also.

LOL!! But it is fun to watch them. Nice shot Tom!!!
grease the pole it work for a wile in that not working use a 12 gage it worked for me but know i have no bird feeder use the grease.
Shot my first one 60 some years ago with a pellet rifle. Many more through the years with a 22. They taste good!!!!
Just yesterday I picked up a flyer at my local Ace Hardware store that is from a company called Cole's (coleswildbird.com). They make a line of bird food, as well as a liquid ("Flaming Squirrel Seed Sauce") that you can squirt on regular bird feed, all of which use chili pepper as the anti-squirrel ingredient. Apparently birds cannot taste it and their digestive systems do not process the chili, whereas those of mammals do. They say within a few days or possibly weeks (once the birds get used to the color change), the birds will be very happy and all the squirrels, dogs, bears, coyotes, rabbits, otters, and hungry neighbors will stay away. Haven't tried it yet but it might just be the ticket!

Well your squirrels are probably getting smarter. They have had 10 years to study the problem. You put out food they like and then complain when they try to get at it. What do you expect?
You are going to make me say something political. Lol.

Hey, the red ones aren't chewing through your feeders. We're talking pest control first, culinary preferences second!
I almost forgot. Thanks for reminding me!

Yep, I understand, the gnaw marks in all my feeders are the result of 'the squirrel'! As my
mom always said, "they have to eat too"! LOL
Not my bird food, though!
Just a tad loud for the neighborhood.

Tom, I finally found the solution; purchase a cake of red hot suet as it doesn't seem to bother the birds. The kind that I purchase (Walmart) is not very sticky so take a knife and shave and crumble a little off of the cake and mix in with you seed. I doesn't take much and after a while you can probably go back to not using it!
But the damage was already done.

Yeah, that is obvious. I just never expected this.
