Hi all I'm mark from Mpls. we have the superbowl here in a week, and I don't see the pro's using the shades much. Thoughts?

You wouldn’t need them in a shaded stadium in daylight and maybe they avoid them due to crowded conditions. You’d need one if the lights come on or shooting towards the sun.

Strange. I see very few pros anywhere that don't use them.

If there's a lot of sun, a shade will aid reducing flare. I always use mine plus it offers a small level of protection.

The main function of a lens hood is to shade the front lens element from stray light. Stray light can come from natural or artificial sources and causes lens flare. Look again at the pros, I'm pretty sure you'll see they are using lens hoods.

The lens hood also protects the front of your lens against impacts and drops.

How much protection against flare does the group think a circular polarizer provides?

Welcome to our forum!

Unless you are in really tight quarters, use the hood. I eliminates extraneous light, and it offers some protection.

Lucky you. We have to wait two weeks here. And I always thought the pros wore helmets.

Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder are pros, and they used shades.

Shades usually help, and original shades for vintage lenses can be hard to find and expensive.

Hi, Mark. I use lens shades 99% of the time. There are rare occasions when they get in the way. Personally, I don't care what the "pros", or anyone else, use or don't.
