How do I get a shuuter count on my Nikon D3100? I found a web site but all it did was to black out my screen.

There is a free software for your computer called PIE (picture information extractor). Very easy to use. Open the app, browse for a pic, either off your card reader or where ever you have the pic stored, open the pic. The app will give you all the meta-data for the pic, including the shutter count, if that info is available for the camera you are using. Some of the older Nikon's (the 5000 series, for example) doesn't imbed that info when the pic is taken.

I was not referring to the D5000. There is an older series Nikon digitals that were not dslr's. They were numbered 5000 and 5400 without the D preceding the number. They were more in the genre of what we refer to these days as 'bridge cameras'.

I stand corrected and beg your pardon

I made a wrong assumption as the OP was talking about a D series camera.

Mea Culpa.

Pardon begging not necessary. I occasionally open my mouth and get my foot in all the way up past the ankle.

Actually, I think the 5000 and 5400 were before Nikon's dslr days. I believe the D50 was their first dslr and the 5000 series predates that.....I think. I actually own a 5400. It has a 5 megapixel sensor, does an adequate job, but I would take any Fuji bridge camera over it, hands down, any day of the week. There is a pretty good market for the 5000 series. Some people buy them and convert them to infrared cameras.
