I use the 28-300 on an 800E when I travel. At other times it remains on the shelf.

I have used the 28-300 for a number of years now on my D800 and find it to be more than satisfactory. So. . . I agree, I think you got a bad deal.

Why would an FX lens go into cropped mode on any camera? And why would you want it to? Your statement makes no sense at all.

True, the Nikkor 28-300 mm lens is an FX lens. Nikon also has an 18-300mm lens that is DX. While Nikon considers both lenses to be "all-in-one" lenses, they often tell people that there really is no such thing as an all encompassing lens. Lenses tend to have areas that they provide the best shots in (sort of a sweet spot) and everything else is a near miss. Nikon tells their support people that the 18-300 and 28-300mm lenses are so that photographers can have a "decent" lens that is all encompassing so that he photographer is only carrying one lens on trips etc. The (and this isn't to increase sales of their other lenses) are among the first o recommend that, for critical work, the photographer used either a prime lens of the needed focal length or a shorter zoom.. All zoom lenses are approximation lenses (intended to get you close enough to a good picture, but not to be considered the end all beat all, one lens does it all solution). If I was going on a trip and could only take one or two lenses, these would be a consideration. I do have an 80-400mm FX lens and I love using it for birding etc. However, I would only consider it for portraits under certain terms or if I didn't have access to a good portrait lens and/or couldn't get closed enough to my subject.

The 28~300 I have seems to think it's an FX lens and works pretty well on my D800e. I have more examples if you need them.

What Jack said!:) I hardly take it off the camera. I feel it is a great walk a round lens. Very happy with it!! I think you had better take it back to were you got it if you can. If not I would send it to Nikon to get it fixed.

I and Erv also use this lens and neither of us are disappointed in it. Does a great job.

Sorry that's not correct - the 28-300mm is very definitely an FX lens - you may be confusing it with the 18-300mm lens which is DX

The D800 series automatically recognize that a DX is mounted and adjust for that. I assume the D850 does the same thing.

I have the identical lens and have no problems with sharpness at the long range. Are you using a lens hood? The vignetting at the 28 mm end could be the lens hood encroaching into the image.

No lens hood. It usually gets corrected in LR post processing but is far worse than my 16-35mm. Worst at f3.5 but almost none at 9 or above.

My opinion is that lens is soft all over. Bought it to go with my D 750, very disappointed. Sold it for primes. When you read others who say it is a great lens, just look at some photos submitted. It all depends on what you consider to be a very good pic. My eye was too demanding to accept the limitations of that lens.

Agree...I am comparing it to my 16-35mm and my 70-300mm lens which are much sharper. I am slowly learning it’s limitations and am getting some better results by shooting at higher f stops.

Untrue, the 28-300 is an FX lens.

Part of my disappointment is that I also have the Nikon AF-S VR 70-300 FX zoom and it is much sharper. On top of that the 28- 300 is more than twice the price of the 70–300mm. I have been able to get rid of some of the problems in post processing but to me that seems pretty silly considering the price of this lens. These are problems that I don’t have with 70-300mm lenses. So I just wanted to hear from others who have used this same lens as to whether they do get some vignettes at wide angles or a lack of sharpness at the 200-300mm ranges.
Part of my disappointment is that I also have the ... (show quote)

Did you do a "Fine Tune" with that lens?

Sell it to someone like me that LOVES his. I get NO vignetting at wide angle and beautiful shots at telephoto. It is at least as sharp as my 18-200 and that lens is also sharp. And, I don't know what reviews you are looking at, but the ones I see are favorable. (B&H photo reviews with photo's) Sorry to hear your getting less than stellar images.

PhotographyLife.com-reviews-lens reviews. They list most of the Nikon lens and this one is 3.1 which is one of the lowest on the list. I knew this going in so can’t say I wasn’t warned...however like I said before I had used a friends last year and it seemed pretty decent and very versatile. I think my problem is I am now comparing it to my 16-35mm which gets reviews like “one of the sharpest wide angles out there “. Also my 70-300 is sharper at the 200-300 Range.

I bought a used Nikon 18-300 5.6 a few years ago and have been disappointed in the sharpness of the pictures when cropped. I am now going through the Nikon AF fine tune process trying to make pictures look sharper. Initial results seem to show a back focus problem. The process to check is not that easy, but better than the price to send to Nikon to do it. my camera is a D500.

Please expand on the “Nikon AF fine tune process” you are doing.
