Also this is most definitely an FX lens. So letâÂÂs put that argument to rest. And my comments regarding the 70âÂÂ300 lens is also referring to the FX model. That is very confusing because there is also a 70-300 DX model.
I have all 3 lenses. The 70-300 non-VR is made in China and is cheaply built and light, pictures so-so. The 70-300 VR is made in Thailand and works well. The FX 28-300 shoots GREAT through all focus points.
Question 1: Did you calibrate your lens to the camera?
Question 2: If new, did you take it back for warranty repair/inspection?
Question 3: If used, did buy a dealer warranty? If so, take it back for inspection.
Question 4: Do you blow out your lenses and camera before each use and also clean the sensor?
Last Question: Do you have another camera you can try it on? A good dealer will generally let you try one of their rental cameras in shop to check it.
Alot of questions but somewhere in those lies the answer.

Am doing some traveling this year so purchased a slightly used Nikon 28-300mm as a one lens solution to use on my D600. I had borrowed a friends last year and it seemed like a pretty decent lens overall, but this one is very disappointing. Anything hand held over 200mm is not clear and also has bad vignetteing at wider angles. It doesn’t get the greatest reviews but this one is pretty bad. Could it be this particular lens is “bad” or could my friend just happen to have a very “good” one. I got a pretty good deal on it but am ready to sell it and go back to plan A...mount my Nikon 16-35mm which is awesome for landscapes and carry my little Nikon 50mm 1.8 which I also love for when I need to travel light or in places like museums or street photos. Comments or suggestions please.

This was one of the few lenses I ever bought new. Used it for about 6 months but did not like the results. Made a straight trade for a near new used AF 80-200mm f.2.8D and bought a used AFS 300mm f/4G. MUCH HAPPIER. I already had a AFS 24-70mm f/2.8G in the bag.

I use a 28-300 FX lens on my D-810 with excellent results. In my opinion it is the ultimate travel lens. The only drawback is coupled with the D-810, it becomes a little heavy on a long walk. For that reason I have ordered a Df with the 50 1.8 & a 24-85 FX lens. The appeal to me of the Fx took me back to my Viet Nam days with the Asahi Pentax Spotmatic.
Nice mountain shot, Orange Krate. Which lens did you use for it?

The 28-300 is not a DX lens the 18-300 is.
That IS CORRECT.
I use my 28-300 very successfully on my D800e.
I am quite pleased with it's performance although it is not quite a sharp at the extreme as my 16-35 and 24-120.
I have a 28-300 lens that I've been using ever since Nikon came out with it. I missed the 18-300 range on the DX version that I use on my crop sensor. This one gives me back some of that flexibility on my FX bodies.
Fundamentally this is a nice lens that does a good job. At the same time though, it's not as expensive as it might be so you do have to compromise a bit on IQ. If you really want quality go for the 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200 all f2.8 lenses. These are tack sharp and incredible but alas also really heavy. That's why I also use the 28-300, it's a lot lighter and the images are ok.
