As an old film photographer I always considered the darkroom work to be an equal part of the photographic process. Now that I've moved to digital, I still feel the same way. Taking and processing the photo is only half the fun. Printing your own photos completes the process and provides more enjoyment.

I haven’t wanted to invest in a high end printer to print, and then frame and hang some of my better shots. Is there a printing service that puts out higher end work versus a Walgreens, Costco or the likes. I’m over a hundred miles from even a mediocre photography store. Any suggestions? Do you all have printers, or do those of you in bigger cities have a shop or online service that you frequent for prints?

I really like the Pro-100 as I do a LOT of "Shades of Gray" printing.
Do you need more than 50?

Ditto for Aspen Creek. Several of their prints adorn my walls.

I have used ProDPI and Whitewall with success. Whitewall is German and more expensive, but does a good job. ProDPI is less expensive and provides free shipping with minimum order. I am probably not going to get a high end printer when I move.

I have a Canon 9500 Pro II printer. What I like about it is I can print a proof on a 4 x 6 sheet to make sure the colors are exactly what I want and then print the full size print.

I would recommend MPix. I have used them for weddings and senior portraits. They have always done a great job. AdoramaPix, Nations Color Lab, Whitehouse Color are also very good.

Agree...

Bay Photo does a really good job of printing. (Not tried MPIX).

And as well... I have two printers - a Canon Pixma 9000 and a Canon Pixma Pro-100 .. I really like the Pro-100 as I do a LOT of "Shades of Gray" printing.

Bought two on E-Bay for about 150.00 each.... Gave one to my son. :-)

Buydig.com currently has the Pro-100 at $329 with free shipping. The final cost after a $250 mail-in rebate is $79. Included is a 50 sheet box of Canon 13x19 semi gloss photo paper. I use quality ink from precisioncolors.com for refilling in all my printers which drastically reduces the cost of printing.

For me it is control. When you really want every color and shade to be perfect, print at home and calibrate it to the screen you do your edits on. I have a Canon Pixma 10. You can also buy the ink in more bulk plastic bottles and refill the ink cartridges youself (you have to replace the little chip that is in each cartridge) to save money. The general, generic photos, take to Costco.

I had a few things done at Whitewall that I was pretty happy with. A couple of gifts, and a Milky Way pano hanging in my hallway.

Disagree. If you use a professional lab like Bay Photo or MPIX, you will get excellent and fast results.

If you're buying a printer, consider the Canon Pixma Pro-100.

I used Bay Photo and I was not impressed, thanks, I'll do my own!
