I haven’t wanted to invest in a high end printer to print, and then frame and hang some of my better shots. Is there a printing service that puts out higher end work versus a Walgreens, Costco or the likes. I’m over a hundred miles from even a mediocre photography store. Any suggestions? Do you all have printers, or do those of you in bigger cities have a shop or online service that you frequent for prints?

I always print my own, as that will give you way better quality prints than you get from a printing service!

Disagree. If you use a professional lab like Bay Photo or MPIX, you will get excellent and fast results.

If you're buying a printer, consider the Canon Pixma Pro-100.

The short answer is yes regarding printing services. Walgreens, Costco typically produce cheap C-type prints which are on photographic paper with silver emulsion, and use wet chemistry to develop, no different than the old days.

Some labs offer fine art printing with inkjet machines, and the quality of those prints is considerably higher, as is the cost. From an economical perspective, prints made at home are far more expensive than what you pay for prints made in a lab.

Try Miller's, Bay Photo, White House Custom Color, and you can do a web search for others that might be near you.

Thanks. I already looked on the sites. They look great. I was hesitant to just pick a company. I’ve seen some of the art prints generated by some internet based companies and was unimpressed. If they mess up a Van Gogh, I knew that I didn’t have a chance. I have some great family shots in fun locals, like sunrise at the top of Mount Sinai shot with a 300S. Great memories. My wife wants some larger prints on the wall. You all saved me.

I have always used Adormapix for professional printing. They do a great job with quick return.
I also do my own printing on an Epson 1900. I have had it for many years with great results.

I use Adoramapix. I also use York photos for my 4x6 test prints. Adorama does great work. I always ask that they do not color edit and any onscreen crop edits I do are faithfully rendered in print. I just ordered prints on Thursday and they will be delivered tomorrow (today if it weren't a holiday), so they have fast turnaround.

As an old film photographer I always considered the darkroom work to be an equal part of the photographic process. Now that I've moved to digital, I still feel the same way. Taking and processing the photo is only half the fun. Printing your own photos completes the process and provides more enjoyment.

Agree. I also use Costco for everyday snapshots. The Canon Pixma Pro-100 is excellent. With large discounts, it's cheap. Canon wants you to buy their ink. Sorta like Gillette selling cheap razors so you'll buy their blades.

Couldn't be happier with what I've gotten back from White House Custom.
Do mostly print my own on a Canon Pro-100.

This is a good start...

Do a search for “professional color lab” and find one near you.

================

Agree...

Bay Photo does a really good job of printing. (Not tried MPIX).

And as well... I have two printers - a Canon Pixma 9000 and a Canon Pixma Pro-100 .. I really like the Pro-100 as I do a LOT of "Shades of Gray" printing.

Bought two on E-Bay for about 150.00 each.... Gave one to my son. :-)
