UHH is kind of like the wild west was: wide open and untamed. Admin infrequently steps in. Just ignore the ones that attack.

I've seen some of the gruff comments too. And then there are the cases where a simple conversation about ISO or something turns into a chest thumping contest about Who Knows More, or an argument about politics. Part of the charm of UHH, but I can see how others might find it only repellent.

It is readily apparent that there are many "snobs" in this world that try to promote their expertise in a public forum, such as UHH,
and fail miserably.
Responding to these negative posts only allows an opening for them to show their ignorance again.
I encourage ignoring such commentary and concentrating on posts that are helpful to the question at hand.

I read through your posts and some of the replies. I didn't see anything worth posting a complaint about. My guess it the admin didn't either. The internet is still very much like the wild, wild west.

A reply to mac not the op, maybe not the most refined post in the world but hardly the worst.

unrelated but
While looking for the offending post . It appears chamans account has been compromised he was posting decent photos and saying nice things.
No sarcasm or spiteful insults at all, somethings wrong ;)

Most people here are great.
(I just ignore the snarks.)
Since there's "one in every bar", for the amount of members, there will be a few.
Yes, many things may have been discussed prior, but unless someone is willing to spend a good deal of time searching......
It's much simpler to ask. (I suppose some people do keep score. )

So in my initial post, I was gently warned that there might be some "gruff" comments from some who are tired of what they believed to be questions that have been repeatedly asked. I get it and was expecting it. But I then create a post with a question regarding a photo and I get a vile response that was out of line and a personal attack out of nowhere. I have tried to complain to admin via PM here and on the tab at the comments section and no response.

I am not comfortable with the possibility of similar responses/slurs/attacks. How does this person get to act like this? Not sure I will be as active as I had planned to be.

Can you provide a link to the posts that attacked you? I couldn't find any.

This forum appears to me to be among the better, more professional ones. I have seen some supposedly serious groups where people called you a dumbass idiot for asking a question, even if you presented yourself as a beginner. I have also experienced the polar opposite where anybody who was rude and demeaning had their membership permanently revoked. Thankfully, this group is much closer to the latter.

If that is all it was, then I would get it.... Photo snobs, and Gear/gadget elitists are what they are are ... But a homophobic slur from nowhere should be addressed. Just my $0.02 worth.

If the response that you are are referring to was the one that could be found in the link posted earlier in this thread that mentioned "funny" and "queer" in association, then I would suggest that it was an inappropriate comment, and may have been a homophobic slur, but could have been far, far worse.

For what it is worth, I live in San Francisco. Simply by that geographic association I have been subjected to much more vitriolic comments. Now, I happen to be straight, but not narrow. My wife and I have many gay friends, some very close, and we find homophobic behavior totally abhorrent, but at the same time humor is humor, and best shared within an understanding community at times.

My wife was taking public transport to work a couple of days ago. Knowing that I am a huge Pink Floyd fan, she sent me a text stating that she had just seen a person wearing a shirt that said: "Wish you were queer". Is that good or bad? I thought it was clever and amusing.

When visiting with some close friends several years back - (a gay couple that turned 60 a couple of years ago, and held a great 60-40-60 party, they had both turned 60, and had been together as a couple for 40 years, they are part of our chosen "family") - one of the guys said while making breakfast for us all, "Hmm! Did I take the bitch pill or the butch pill this morning?" It was hilarious, but perhaps just because of the company, or that he was 'allowed' to make the comment, yet I for example may not have been 'allowed' to make the comment. Now I could, and he'd probably just burst into laughter and give me a big kiss.

Where do we draw the line? There are times when a thick skin is required on UHH, and there are a few 'Ugglies', but most are great even if a little crusty at times.

Please stay with us. You are welcome here. There is however minimal moderation and some things get ignored by admin.

Unfortunately, there are jackasses or know it alls on every forum you look at. I get a kick out of the person with 14000 posts compared to the average of several hundred - generally these are the snipes. I just ignore it, or block them, if possible, then move on to seek the answer I am new to this forum and have asked several questions and have found the members to be very friendly and helpful. I hope to be able to return the favor. At the same time - trolls, snipers, and just plain jerks continue to be around and as others said - if unreachable, then they try to play a bit rough sadly. Keep poking at it - good folks here!

I too want to extend a welcome to you and hope to see many of your posts in the future. In my many years on this planet, I am still amazed at the rudeness in which we address others. If you wouldn't care to be addressed in such a fashion, then think twice and not post it. My 2 cents.

In general I agree. As one of those that does criticize or make some snarky or sarcastic comments at times, I would suggest that they shouldn't be made if you can't take the responses. It's the old "if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen" saying. This is a public forum, so I use the rule that anything that I'm saying I am saying in public and should be willing to be accountable for. That does not mean that I don't ruffle some people's feathers, and sometimes intentionally. I do try to avoid insulting people unintentionally.

The ignore status does have one useful function, it prevents PMs being sent. I received one a little while ago, with someone name calling and saying that he didn't want to say it in public, while pushing the ignore button so I couldn't respond. So I simply responded to it by posting in public on the same thread in the forum. Others could/can make their assessment.

As Bette Midler - The Divine Miss M - once said, "I stand before you, nipples to the wind!"

Welcome!

Shortly after I joined, someone posted a question about a particular camera/lens combination; I had taken some pictures at the county fair that evening with exactly that combination, so I posted them. Unfortunately, my contribution wasn't very useful because I didn't check "store original"; doubly unfortunate, another user blasted me for "posting snapshots"

I'm still here

There are such things as "stupid questions". I know because I ask them all the time. But, I usually feel better when I learn the answer.

Its inevitable if you stay here and that's why its called the Ugly Hedge Hog. There is a positive side to tolerating the jerks because after awhile you build an immunity to criticisms and insults and that's useful in today's society.

Welcome.

You are correct, there are some stupid questions, but they are quite rare. Questions that are seeking information - to address ignorance of a situation are not stupid, even if they seek clarification multiple times - but they are not stupid. Stupid is sometimes defined as "an inability to learn" while ignorance can be cured no matter how long it takes so long as the desire and ability to learn is there. There is no shame is saying "I do not understand." There is shame in calling somebody an idiot or stupid.

From what I've seen so far, I haven't seen stupid questions from you. Can you quote any?
