There’s an old saying, “Illigitimi non carborundum.” Translated, “Don’t let the bastards grind you down.” You’ll find a few here that are grumpy, but by far, the vast majority are fine folks, more than willing to give of their knowledge and experience. Just consider the sourced and ignore it.

Just a couple tips.

Before asking a question, do some research on your subject first, and if you find out what you’re looking for, then ask.

Be sure to use the search function at the top of the page. Often you’ll find an answer you can’t find via Google.

When you ask a question, be specific, not broad, so we can help you out. Folks will appreciate that. We are “gifted” with quesrions like, “What is the best camera to buy?” And such. We need to know more.

No name calling, however tempting it might be when someone taunts you. Be the good guy. And if someone is too offensive, put him on your ignore list.

That should get you started out right. So don’t go away. Hang around. You won’t regret it, and you just might make a few friends.

Ah, yes, I think I found the comment to which you refer; 01/11 in the Photo Gallery. A comment was made by a person whose username is probably indicative of his level of intelligence (or lack thereof). You will, regrettably, have to endure such comments from the occasional member. While it is possible that he is from a country in which the word is used in its original context and has nothing to do with the more modern crass and crude interpretation, you must also consider that the use of the word was the result of indirect (or even direct) inbreeding. It did appear that the member stretched his comment to include the word. You'll have to adapt to the occasional member who loses his/her line of thought and digresses into "off-topic" comments, including periodic personal comments (I stand guilty as charged). Please do not let such boorish behavior dissuade you from enjoying what is really a fun forum.

It just occurred to me that "he" is possibly a "she" with deep emotional issues. Nah; that can't happen.

You have raised a question for which I have long sought an answer. The order of the words not withstanding, it is my recollection from Mrs. Keele's Latin class (well over a half century ago) that "um" referred to the singular conjugation of a verb, while "us" indicated the plural. It has been my belief then that the proper term is "Non Carborundus illegetimus (or imi, depending on the number of bastards).". I have no idea as to the proper phrasing of this term, but I agree whole heartedly with its application in this instance!

If the response that you are are referring to was the one that could be found in the link posted earlier in this thread that mentioned "funny" and "queer" in association, then I would suggest that it was an inappropriate comment, and may have been a homophobic slur, but could have been far, far worse.

For what it is worth, I live in San Francisco. Simply by that geographic association I have been subjected to much more vitriolic comments. Now, I happen to be straight, but not narrow. My wife and I have many gay friends, some very close, and we find homophobic behavior totally abhorrent, but at the same time humor is humor, and best shared within an understanding community at times.

My wife was taking public transport to work a couple of days ago. Knowing that I am a huge Pink Floyd fan, she sent me a text stating that she had just seen a person wearing a shirt that said: "Wish you were queer". Is that good or bad? I thought it was clever and amusing.

When visiting with some close friends several years back - (a gay couple that turned 60 a couple of years ago, and held a great 60-40-60 party, they had both turned 60, and had been together as a couple for 40 years, they are part of our chosen "family") - one of the guys said while making breakfast for us all, "Hmm! Did I take the bitch pill or the butch pill this morning?" It was hilarious, but perhaps just because of the company, or that he was 'allowed' to make the comment, yet I for example may not have been 'allowed' to make the comment. Now I could, and he'd probably just burst into laughter and give me a big kiss.

Where do we draw the line? There are times when a thick skin is required on UHH, and there are a few 'Ugglies', but most are great even if a little crusty at times.

Please stay with us. You are welcome here. There is however minimal moderation and some things get ignored by admin.

I get it, "Wish You Were Here". A great Pink Floyd song and album. I'm a massive Pink Floyd fan! A friend gave my wife a Pink Floyd T-shirt with a big pink pig on it. Very cool.

Have you heard the version with Stephane Grapelli sitting in?

Unfortunately I never took Latin, so I am compelled to accept what you say here as correct. But that’s how I’ve always heard it said. Howver, here’s a twist: Carborundumj is an element, often used in making knife sharpening stones due to its abrasive qualities. So, that catchy phrase may possibly be fake latin. Oh, and my major in college was French. By now I’ve forgotten most of what I ever knew as I never used it. Oh well.

Careful now. Some of us are beginning to delve into character assignation, the same behavior that we're accusing the original commenter of. If we're going to spank someone, we should be better than that.

It's still not known if, originally, there was an intent to insult or not.

Oh, I don’t think there’s any of that going on here. Just friendly banter. Should I brush up on my Latin? LOL.

So in my initial post, I was gently warned that there might be some "gruff" comments from some who are tired of what they believed to be questions that have been repeatedly asked. I get it and was expecting it. But I then create a post with a question regarding a photo and I get a vile response that was out of line and a personal attack out of nowhere. I have tried to complain to admin via PM here and on the tab at the comments section and no response.

I am not comfortable with the possibility of similar responses/slurs/attacks. How does this person get to act like this? Not sure I will be as active as I had planned to be.

Well if you don't like the comments, stay the heck away. Just kidding - really.

Seriously, as you can note by this thread some folks are easily distracted and threads often go off-topic. Perhaps that's what happened in your original case.

One tip: Go to the Home page, scroll to the bottom and click on the "all sections". This opens the door to many specialty sections which might be of interest to you. For example, you might get better feedback on your goose photo by taking it to any of several sections: Post-processing could teach you about how to improve it in software packages. Photo Critque could get you more detailed feedback on things they like or don't like. Birds in flight/on Water section can give you help on not only photography but field craft. If you find a section you want to visit regularly, you can add it to your home page list.

Welcome and have fun.

Those were rather bizarre responses from that particular poster, not like what he has posted in the past to the best of my knowledge. Maybe he was having a bad day.

Members are pretty much left alone on UHH. Generally the admins stay out of squabbles and the only thing they will do is move a thread to the Attic section if it gets too confrontational or political, etc.

Personally I prefer it that way compared to other forums which are monitored fiercely, where the admins can and do ban anyone they disagree with. UHH is more like a schoolyard playground with no teachers around. Sometimes you walk away, sometimes you choose to fight. Either way, you belong to the group. Maybe that's why it is called the Ugly Hedgehog.

Yes, it's fake. My comment was made with my tongue firmly implanted in my cheek. The most important factor in the saying is the interpretation. 🎓👨🏼‍🎓🎓

Be positive and patient. When I started here I had a few collisions but now I am friends with everyone on the forum. People have a bad day now and then and it may show here on the forum. Nothing to worry about. The forum life is like our real life, mostly happiness and good days but sometimes we see the other side of life also.
