That is why they are both going downhill at the moment ....

You'd better read Rongnongno's thread about the misuse of the term Full Frame. However, now that "Full Frame" is in the common lexicography as referring to 24x3 mm sensors, I would think that his objection is moot.
Right. Full frame is now an accepted term of art referring to particular size of sensor. Wishing it were otherwise is pointless.

You might have some difficulty defending that opinion with actual market data. Do you have any?

I have no intention of defending it - except to say it is my educated and experienced observation .... !

That's fine, your opinion is valid, - or your right to hold it - and you are certainly educated, but without data not necessarily informed.
This is a market in transition, which is always complicated. To claim that 'Sony is the future' is not defensible.
Do you have any experience in market research other than as a consumer?

No, but I do have exceptionally good common sense and a great knowledge of cameras and how to use and apply them. And, when all else fails, I consult my crystal ball

That's fine. I certainly value your opinions, more so than many. However, professional market researchers will model and forecast the market, but very rarely call out vendor predictions. They're simply too hard to predict since so many things can go wrong. Also, the future is quite a long time period, most market forecasts seldom go beyond five years out. It is entirely possible that Sony may continue to do really well, but the tables can turn very quickly.
I'm not being negative about Sony, I think that the company is making great products, especially its sensors, but if you look at the latest CIPA data I think you'll find that mirrorless cameras have bigger traction in Asia than in Europe and America. Also, in Japan, apparently Canon has pushed Sony into third place in the mirrorless market. How that plays out is very hard to predict.
I'm with Yogi Berra on this one: “It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future.”
I think Nikon and Canon will respond, they have to. Competition among these and Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax is all good for the advancement of innovation. Sony obviously has laid down the gauntlet with its amazing cameras. I love the Sony mirrorless and do believe that mirrorless will lead the way for things that no DSLR can ever physically do. I personally will never go back to a DSLR, but they wont die right away either. Loyal fans will keep them around for awhile .
Look for all camera manufacturers to have their very best DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras and lenses ready to do battle at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. That is their target date for sure. Look for loads of releases leading up to that date.

From my graduate study in statistics what we know about "common sense" It is not all that common, it seldom makes sense and it is frequently just flat out wrong.
News reports cite that DSLR sales were down almost 28% in 2018, while mirrorless sales were up 22%. It will be interesting to see what happens worldwide. US sales are only part of the picture for these global companies.
Thank you for your reply. The wi-fi feature of the 6dii sounds pretty nice. Does the L series lenses have the IS feature? I just bought a Tamron 24-70 G2 f/2.8 because it does have the image stabilizer feature and since my Canon body doesn't, I wanted it in my lens. Jury's still out on it. Not quite as sharp as I'd hoped and it's heavy, which could be causing some of the focus issues. I do a lot of handheld shooting--not really a tripod gal unless absolutely necessary.
Where do you find the L series lenses? I'm only seeing the EF series on the sites I shop.

The L lenses are the top quality range of EF lenses, and many have IS. Look for designations such as this:

Hi Cathy,
I used shorthand when referring to my lens. Follow this link to the exact one. and, yes, it does have image stabilization. It will be heavy so while you are not a tripod fan you may want to think about a monopod. Not good for long exposures but will add a good deal of stability at reasonable shutter speeds.
