You are correct, the ML-3 is compatible as it adds the receiver. The ML-3 receiver will even recognize the ML-L3 transmitter. It also recognizes TV remotes too!

Like I said, I bought this set for my F5s and am quite surprised it is still available. Neither the latest nor the best technology out there, but it's been a trooper for me. I suspect I'll be using the newer radio system in the future as I have recently converted to SB-5000 speedlites. I guess I could just stock up on TV remotes!

I bought it for my F4 in about 1989, used it on my F5s as well. It gave up the ghost on my D1X in around 1997. It was always a pain but did work well.

I have this set https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1096384-REG/yongnuo_rf_603ii_n1_rf_603n_ii_wireless_flash.html?sts=pi with the appropriate cables for my Nikon and Olympus cameras. It's a radio control, not IR, so a clear line of sight between transmitter and receiver is not required, and it's unaffected by bright/sun light so it's reliable in daylight. I've only had mine for a few months but it has been perfectly reliable every time I've used it.

Get the app, Camera Remote for your phone. It is free.
Or you can get the remotes from eBay, for 9¢

I did know an IR remote wouldnt work with this camera but didn't know what other devices might be out there. I think the RF unit is more than I need so I'll likely go with the 10 pin remote. Thanks for your reply.

Methinks it has snapbridge. Use your phone.

The App is free.

(I much prefer the simplicity of the infrared but they took it off the D5600, too. Saves maybe 50 cents, I guess.)

PS: I hate the 10 pin connection on my D800. They positioned it so you can’t get your fingers around the collar. Looks like it might be improved on D500. Try before you buy.
