Hi Jim,
Take a look at my site http://martinalpertphotos.com. I really like Virb.com. It is $10/month, but I like that is mine and not under someone elses umbrella.
I haven't published prices yet, but will.
...just a question or two. You don't mention sizes of your photos. What sizes do you offer?
Your prices are much less than I envision charging. Have you figured out what you will make?

Martin, your photos are outstanding and the site is well done.

You can look at sizes when you open a photo and click on art prints. There you can select the size of the print. There is a default setting for you to set your profit on each size that you sell plus you get a 5% commission on all framing and matting services.

My prices may be a bit low right now but I am just in the process of setting this up. It is going to take me a while.

Very nice job, Jim. You just started this site yesterday??

I got frustrated w/ SmugMug and made my own site. (www.martinalpertphotos.com) I used Virb.com. It was easy! I don't know HTML. I used their template and had it up in a week.
I feel it is very easy to navigate and people don't get frustrated (at least my limited focus group didn't).

I still have to do a blog and Facebook page.

I'm still investigating how to sell online. Now, I provide contact info, but will soon include actual prices and framing alternatives.

Go for the premium Fine Arts America site. It costs $30 a year and it is very easy to set up. I am in the process of adding my photos right now. Take a look at http://jimplogger.artistwebsites.com/

That's not bad when you have no investment and no handling whatsoever.

Maybe I should just look for the $ on my work. In other words price my photos where I want to and not be bothered with the rest.

Does anybody have an idea about sales numbers on artistwebsites.com or SmugMug?

Do you have to do your own outside promotion to bring business to the site?

Have been on Smugmug www.redstick-images.com for 2 years now, have sold several thru the site but have done better handling my own marketing. Had a portfolio made and use that. Best thing about Smugmug is that Bay Photo handles framing and matting and distribution of any sales made.

I have smugmug, too, but not aware that Bay Photo does any matting. Are you sure? I have sold about $400 via smugmug but that barely pays for the yearly cost. Marketing needs to be done by the photographer - always driving people to the web site. ie - hand out cards at events directing people to your site for image purchase.
