I am considering setting up a new photography website using Smugmug and a domain name through GoDaddy. I am looking at the Smugmug Pro account at $150 per year and $9.95 per year for the domain name. I am curious if any UHH members are using Smugmug Pro and how successful have you been. Pros and cons? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

My husband just spent the last month building my website. It will be launched tonight for my clients to see their pix and place their orders.
Fortunately he is very good at what he does. We did look at SmugMug, but because of the variety of templates and backgrounds, it was easier for my husband to do, not to mention if I went to a website designer, it would've cost so much. My husband is a computer programmer, and since he lost his job in December when the company closed down, he has been helping me with my photography jobs. It's great to have 2 photographers when you're shooting a fund raising softball game for the Ronald McDonald house and 3 fields are being used. Not to mention shooting a wedding. I do the composed shots & portraits and my husband goes around shooting the candids. Makes for great wedding albums.

I am in the middle of building mine, I'm going more with a blog/website as to help with the SEO part a little easier and i'm forgoing any flash as it won't work on Apple products. Mine is still in the rough set up stage and I haven't started the blogging part yet or finished the galleries either.

Feel free to check out what I have so far ......

I studied HTML language via a couple of books.
I now use Eversoft First page (free) to construct my website and Page breeze (fee)for my file transfer protocol.
I have written and maintain my website.

I am continually adding and subtracting pages as needed.
Good luck with your project
What you are proposing is NOT an overnight project!

100% correct. I am ready to launch the website my husband built for me. Over a month in the making and he's a computer programmer.

Why pay for a service is someone you know will do for you? The reason, time is precious. It's taken over a month of building, but he needed to do something since out of work for 6 months. Thank you for that info, wish I had known sooner.
If you go to CyAnPortraits.com, you can see what he has done for me so far.

I should have added that I wish to price my own work and have the photos printed and shipped without me having to get involved in that. I still hope to hear from someone who is doing this now and how well it is working.

I am in the middle of the same project right now. Big difference is that I am NOT a professional yet but hope to be in the future (I have a PLAN!).

My 15 year old son and his best friend said they could make a site for me so I decided to "hire them". Initially I thought this would be a great "1st job" for them with a friendly customer :o).

The costs are turning out to be similar to what jpintin mentioned. Note: the boys offered to go the route of building by hand but as we got into it reality set in and it would take their whole summer and beyond. I believe they have used a combination of a site/domain from fat cow as well as Zenfolio. ( My hat is off to your husband jjadeco25)

Having said all that (sorry I rambled) I am pretty happy with how it's turned out so far - even though I haven't decided how many people I'll show it to. Actually, you are guys are the 1st I think?

I had an idea of how I wanted it to look before we started. Mostly by looking at as many sites as I could.

I enjoyed looking at the sites and photos you guys listed. Great job on both.

Really like your layout and photos. That was actually what I was going for on mine. Nice job on the introduction portion at the bottom also. That part was actually hard to sit down and right for some reason.

I like the over all look of your site. I did notice a couple of issues though.

1. IMO the pictures fading in and out is nice but the transition time is to long.

2. The drop down menu's don't line up with the header choices which makes it difficult to navigate the site.
