We're having a great year for Snowy Owls and I'm frequently out on the beaches at dawn with numb fingers. I've tried several combinations of liners and gloves that sort of work, i.e: liners under neoprene kayaking gloves, but they're all pretty clumsy when it comes to manipulating dials and buttons (shutter excepted). I'm just wondering if anyone out there has come across a good, super warm photographer friendly glove?

Check out hunting mittens. They have a slit across the palm that allows you to slip a "trigger" finger out when needed.

I use glomitts with a hand warmer in each. With a fleece pair, I can maneuver the index finger and thumb out of the mitten and keep everything else covered. I do a lot of photography in below freezing weather, something that is equally important is to have a leg wrap on your tripod legs, otherwise every time you move the tripod it is like gripping an ice cube.

Look for a pair of winter golf gloves. They provide a good grip and a flexible. Would not use to shove snow, but great for golf and taking pictures.

Ask the help of someone who knits! Then: A pair of gloves with the fingertips specially treated to be used for texting and other cell-phone operations. Have a second pair of warm, warm gloves knitted, but leave the tips of at least the thumbs, index and middle fingers off, then wear these over the texting gloves.

We're staying with our son and family for Christmas and New Year's, it's lovely bright weather, perfect for taking photos of the kids in the snow.... at -30 degrees Centigrade...
Toque, scarf, parka, lined boots and these "double gloves" all help in staying warm, even outside!

I use a pair of gloves I purchased from REI https://www.rei.com/product/119355/rei-co-op-switchback-3-in-1-gloves

The important part was the material on the liners that allow me to use a cell phone. That is critical for exposure/processing determination. They are quite warm.

Two specialist photographer gloves come to mind:

Vallerret Markhof Pro - nice design finger tips for index and thumb open and are held in place w/ magnets $68 @ B&H. Warmer to lower temperatures, and you can get merino wool liners.
AquaTech Sensory Gloves - has holes on index finger and thumb that allow you to manipulate camera controls $50 @ B&H. The finger holes in the Aquatechs can be tight, I had to cut a small slit to allow easier access without pinching.

Both allow you the dexterity to set up tripod, open canse, etc and then pop fingers out when you need to shoot.

Just go to a snowski store and buy a good pair of glove liners. They're purposefully warm, and are thin enough to allow for mechanical manipulation.

I have the camera around my neck and my hands in my pockets. Gloves never work for me when I'm shooting. Hand warmers in the pockets help.

My hands are never warm regardless of how many gloves I wear. My defense, I use a hand warmer inside my pockets, when I am ready to shoot, I take my hands out of my pockets, shoot, and then back in my hands go, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

I use a combination of a hunting muff with hand warmers and thin liners. I keep my extra batteries in there too.

I have tried tons of gloves and came up with the same answer, none are good for taking photos. I shoot ice hockey games and after two games my fingers are numb, can't feel any buttons or dials. I came across heat packs that I put inside my pockets and gloves. Keeps the fingers alive (warm) and able to feel the shutter button and other controls. Use the combo of a good pair or two of photo gloves and heat packs....... Good luck and keep us posted if you should locate a pair of gloves that keep your hands warm and usable.

There a number of heated gloves available where the heating elements are woven into the fabric and heats your fingers as well as the palm. Worth checking out.

I bought Power in Motion heated glove liners. Pricey, but I have arthritis and the cold really gets to my fingers. These have three heat settings up to nice and toasty and the heating element covers the whole finger. Being glove liners you'll need an outer glove; I use Hot Shot shooting mittens. The batteries can be stored in the gauntlet or with the wire harness provided you can put them in a coat pocket. The finger ends are flexible enough to operate all the controls.

Mittens are much warmer. Can also make a fist inside the mittens for more warmth. Slip out only the finger(s) you need to take the picture.
