I just received my D850 and have read Nikon's manual but still have some questions. In the past I have used Thom Hogan's Guides (D300 & D800) but he hasn't published one yet. Which alternatives have other D850 users found useful?

It's a pretty new camera for any new publications to be in print. I'm sure that your experience with the other cameras and their settings will get you by until one is in print. Also, you could just google anything you have questions about or perhaps look in youtube.

2 things I don't like about Nikon manuals: 1) They are are mostly about how to with little about why to. 2) They feed info in little pieces, e.g. index sends you to page 47, which sends you to page 314, then page 156, which sends you back to page 47 where you started. :(

Mine came with a manual and I got mine when they first came out. I was lucky enough to be on the pre order list and got it within thre days of release. Also, you can go out to the nikon USA web site and download a manual. I seems to be a lot more straight forward than manuals of the past. Either that or I am just understanding what they’re saying more these days.

I agree that Nikon manuals seem to take a very long time to get to a simple subject. It also seems to me that they are written in Japanese and then translated to english in which process they may lose some accuracy. Thankfully I have been using Nikon cameras for 30 years and can (sometimes) figure it out on my own. If you do have a question, there is always Nikon Tech support, but I've found some techs friendly and very knowledgeable (Patrick is one of those) and some who obviously know less than me! I have a D5 and D500, along with my D850, so I concentrated on the differences rather than reading the entire manual. Quite frankly, some of the discussions on UHH provide better and correct information. Happy Holidays to ALL!

Thom Hogan is worth waiting for, assuming he's working on it as we speak.

Steve Perry is great, too.

I have gone to Nikon USA and asked questions and gotten excellent, easy to understand explanations for the D200, D800, D5 and now the D850.

There is so much out there that it becomes a personal opinion about which are the best.

Any of the suggestions listed here should be helpful.

Good luck.

I have found Klostermann's "Nikon D850 Experience" to be an excellent guide. It is clear and extraordinarily detailed, (which one requires for this complex camera). His coverage of the autofocus system is comprehensive, as well as his explanations of all the Custom Settings and menus. He even includes a free link to his detailed Menu Setup Guide Spreadsheet, with all his camera setup suggestions. Importantly, the guide goes though all the various options for the numerous button assignments, with helpful examples, and his suggestions again.

I had intended to start off with D850 Experience, then read the other guides when they become available in a few months - but now I don't really feel the need for another guide, and from past experience I'm not sure what they will cover that this book has missed.

Yes ... a good one for D850 and D750; not redundant to reading manuals.
