As you read in my post I was not happy to be shooting mid day like that but I was at the mercy of their schedule.[/quote]

As someone else suggested, use a fill flash for those difficult lighting situations if you can't move your subject into the shade. That would've eliminated the harsh contrast between shadows and brightly lit sections of his face. Just a thought.....

Great pics and I'm guessing these fellows will appreciate your work. I must question the comment about the 1st one being the best, as everything I've ever read says not to shoot faces in direct overhead sunlight. His nose looks HUGE because of the shadows on his face, imho. Try putting him in the shade if you can't get the sun behind you so his face is evenly lit. Overall, really nice photos, to my eye.

No actually his nose is huge... Just kidding. This was not one I used in the shoot because the light was so harsh. I included it in the post because I think the question was about poses.

I like the arms crossed in front of them, or a jacket swung over their shoulder hanging onto it with one finger, or a foot up on a bench or log with them leaning on their knee, you could even look at other photographers senior pics for ideas. I'm always looking at other photographers pages. Not just to get ideas..but to admire their work. Very relaxing. Good luck.

I was using a fill flash but that will only get you so far. What I would have done if I had a second set of hands is use a reflector.

I know how that is , I once shot a Wedding at 1:00 pm in July in Texas.
I will refuse any shoots around mid-day in the future.

One "pose " I always wanted to see done - my oldest was a certified firefighter, soccer star, EMT basic, and baseball player. Could you make a split-level harlequin, with all 4 uniforms blended ? Even if it was Photoshopped, it would be something !

Senior pic. #2 the last one. I think he is leaning a little too much. He looks off balance. In all the photos they are leaning, but are not off balance. Men lean! Try standing a little straighter and take the hands out of the pockets, maybe just hook a thumb if you want. Maybe try with him leaning on his left arm on the tree. You do very good work though. Bottom line, this is just my opinion and I am sure there are those who disagree with me. Keep up the good work.

Try the idea of sitting on the hood of the car, leaning forward, hands clasped out in front of him. it makes for a great senior picture with both vulnerability and masculinity.

I might point out I used a fill flash.

Which is what I felt was missing from the first of the set of 3 grad photos.

I liked the last of the three grad images the most by far - and never would have thought to crop it as suggested. (each to their own).

Best,
D.
