When I edited this one for posting in another section ( http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-498681-1.html ), I was surprised at the potential the shot had considering its drab beginnings. How much potential can you find in it?

JPG and TIFF below, link to DNG underneath. For some reason I managed to get better resolution for the tiff file. The DNG refused to condense down without making a downward jump in size just as it got close to being a usable size (~22MB). The TIFF is probably the best option to work from.

Your photo shouted at me to try out Affinity Photo instead of my usual Lightroom and Photoshop. My result is probably nothing like the reality and a similar to an overdone HDR type tonal mapping. I did not use the HDR nor tonal Mapping features, just played with the sliders and I am amazed at how much colour was contained in the Tiff file. If I can bring this monster under control, I think Affinity will be a good tool for the future.

OK... here is my attempt using LR. Not a lot of dynamic range to work with, but I gave it a go anyway.

Awesome! I see you went with the purple instead of fighting it. That kind of processing would be too much for ordinary landscapes, but when you're happy to have reality take a back seat....

Thanks for joining in, Gitchigumi. You've managed to find shed-loads of vividness that isn't obvious from the original. If you used the tiff or dng there should have been plenty dynamic range and colour depth. The file's a merge of bracketed exposures and both formats are lossless.

From the jpg. +2 -2 Psuedo then adjusted the color and tone in Perfect Effects 8. Selected the larger red leaf and adjusted the hue opacity to 39%. Applied noise control with Neat Image. The end result was opening the shadows and increasing the color overall.

Thanks for contributing, Gaylord. Your processing did a good job of controlling the haze, particularly the purple stuff in the background - best so far .

I too played with reality but, my reality is sometimes a surprise- even to me! ...tried to find a different crop but you've nailed that already. So, I desaturated the distant view and darkened foreground... I kept kicking up sharpness thinking it "couldn't hurt" but it's right at the edge of being grainy and scratchy... probably should have removed the swan (?)- a vertical highlight amidst the horizontals Regardless... here's my take...

(accidentally posted first in FYC by fuminous).

That is a masterful use of light, fuminous. And an excellent choice of colours. I think the "swan" is just reflected light, but it was close enough to make me do a double-take .

I love this shot and this exercise. Thank you for sharing this! Here are my attempts, using LR and Nik filters.

I’m not one for playing with other people’s files RG, so if I may just comment, I reckon Marylea has really cracked it. A truly beautiful result. And well done you for a lovely composition.
Knowing your preferences in processing, I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be your favourite too!
Edit: I’d actually not looked at Maryleas’ second offering. Both are lovely, but the subtlety of the first is stunning.

Hello again R.G.
Been laid up for a bit. Got sepsis and ended up having a total left hip replacement. Spent 3 month in hospital and now I have so much muscle wastage I can't get out with the old D800 so I enjoyed playing with your file.

All in Lightroom and after my general start i.e. highlights, shadows, blacks, whites etc, I done some dodging and burning to try and show some depth. A slight touch on the shadows with the split toning and sharpen to 40%.

Thanks for posting, I enjoyed trying to get back into pp after updating the programs and making sure everything is still there.

thanks again,

Alan.

Marylea

You're welcome, Marylea. #1 is vivid and at the same time 100% believable. #2 is ramped up but very subtly and pleasingly. Both are excellent efforts.

Thanks for commenting, Dave. I'm trying not to have one favourite - so far they're all my favourites - but I'd give her first prize for keeping a sense of realism.
