I would keep the D3300 and pick up a used D90, you won't be disappointed...

Hi, Diane. I'm also on a fixed income & just moved to a full frame. I went with the D600. It's older, but it works great & fairly inexpensive on Ebay. They're plentiful & lenses are inexpensive as well. I also use a D7100 so lenses are interchangeable. Best of both worlds. Nikon says the D600 is good for 150000 clicks, so should last for quite a while. Enjoy!

With the D850 out now, D810s can be had at a discount. I would look at all the REPUTABLE stores, including use camera stores like KEH. The D810 is a terrific camera and can do most anything you might need or want to do.

If a pop up flash is not important, then a Df is 10oz lighter than a D700 and newer technology. If you need the flash, I'd say look at a D750, only a couple ozs heavier than a Df.

Yes, for sure. The P900 has a teeny little sensor and the D3300 is much larger. It will get much better pictures.

Hi dB, I was just thinking that I would like to get a D850 yesterday, but the price is a little intimidating for a fellow retiree, so I thought maybe if I sell my D800e first, that might lessen the financial punch. And here you are asking about cameras. My D800e is hobbyist used, (by me, who bought it New) so it’s in pristine condition, almost like New. I say almost because I have probably 15,000 actuation on it but that’s a guess because I don’t know how to check, and with 15,000 actuation, something must show something, somewhere that it has been touched by human hands, at least. I even have all the original packaging, and, of course, it too looks like new. It would come with a Nikon grip and 3 batteries.

If you’re interested, I see you are in Arizona, I’m in LA and would be willing to meet halfway so you could see it with your own eyes. I’m not actively trying to sell it anywhere and I really like the camera, but the one thing the D850 has that I would like that the 800e doesn’t is built-in WiFi, because when I shoot portraits I like to shoot thethered, and for some reason the D800e doesn’t always stay tethered to Lightroom (I’ve actually heard this is common).

As far as price, I’ll be fair with you, so please be fair with me, in return.

If you want to see some of the photos I have taken with it, my website is: jonsommer.photoshelter.com

Please send a pm if interested. Thanks, Jon

You can purchase a WiFi adaptor for your D800e but the D850 is so nice I’m thinkong of selling my Harley Street Glide to buy it and good glass like the Holy Trinity a prime 600 tripod and Gimbo Not sure I can do all that for $15,000

Good luck with your search. I owned the D800 and have currently shoot with the D810. Both are nice camera's and a BIG upgrade from your D3300.
For now you might consider the trusty old Nikon 60 MM D micro with your D3300.

This lens on a D3300 is manual focus only, the D3xxx snd D5xxx series do not have built in drive motors.

I have used D810 with battery grip and three EN-EL 15 batteries that I will consider selling. I bought a D5 last summer and the D810 has been gathering dust ever since. The only hiccup is I would only sell to someone I can meet face-to-face (northern VA/Washington DC area). Had some issues with Cragslist buyers when I sold my D800 a while back. Serial number is 3014304. Battery grip is grey market (made in China), but works fine. I would have to check on the shutter count. Make me an offer.

Hi Db, the sensor in your D3300 is very capable, if you're not happy with the quality of images your getting, it's probably not the camera. Better glass would help but, then again it's the photographer not the gear that makes the final image. Save your money and spend more time practicing with and learning your existing camera. I too started with a D3300 about two years ago, the image quality is very good even with the use of kit lenses (which get an undeserved bad rap IMO), if you're experiencing a case of GAS, look at buying yourself some better glass.

Look to buying FX lenses so that when you do upgrade your body you'll already have glass to use with it. When it comes to upgrading your camera body you should look at doing so when the gear you currently have is not capable of achieving what you want due to limited functionality. My reason for upgrading from the D3300 was it's lack of internal drive motor, that it doesn't support off camera flash with built in commander mode and that it also doesn't support high speed sync.

Then I ran across an older (D90) body w/ a 50mm f/1.8 lens and carry bag at a yard sale for $200, granted it was older, had less megapixels (12) versus the D3300's 24 megapixels but, what it did have where the three missing functions I listed above. I've gotten just as good an image quality from the D90 as I have from the D3300, just limited on crop ability because of the 12 vs. 24 megapixels, just work on composition and fill the frame and it becomes a non issue.

Then again if you're looking to upgrade your camera body due to limitations you've run up against for much less than an FX body you could look at the D7xxx series of APS-C crop sensors like the D3300, you wouldn't need to buy glass to start using it and it will have all the capabilities listed above that are missing from your D3300. If you go FF you'll need glass to go with it otherwise the camera will default to DX mode and you'd not be using the FF to it's capabilities and will have spent extra money you don't have for the same results out of the camera. What ever you decide good luck and happy shooting.

If you don't use your D3300 as often as the P900 or a little Sony then are you sure you will be using the D8xx more often? If you just simple use your D3300 your pictures may be already better.
I think the D8xx series cameras are great cameras but I guess that you don't have lot of money because you're looking to buy used. If so I would say save your money.

"I want to get way better quality pictures"

I want you to understand something. The camera has little to do with the quality of your pictures. If your techniques are good and you have a solid knowledge of photography your pictures are going to be good.
A new camera and a new lens is not the answer if you are not getting good quality right now with what you have. A modern semi-professional camera like those expensive ones you have in mind could make your life easier and a professional lens could give you better quality let's say than a kit lens but still it is you who makes the photographs.
If you are short on money or in a budget there are "old" FX bodies that could serve you well. The D700 right now has a very attractive price in the used market. The D610 with its 24 Mp. has all the resolution you will ever need and both models are easily available in the second hand market with the D610 also available as a refurb.
You will note that you are going to take a hit when you sell your DX lenses and another one when you buy FX lenses although buying FX lenses in the second hand market will always be a little cheaper. Evaluate your options because bodies like the D7200, a very nice camera, is exactly the same as what you are using now, obviously a more advanced model, and the lenses fit.
My advise, just evaluate your options. It could save you money and perhaps some headaches.

The D3300 is a very good entry-level crop sensor camera with 24 megapixels. Nikon really nailed it good, when they released that camera. It has been discontinued. A suggestion was a D700. Keep in mind, that camera has 12.1 megapixels, and was released in 2008. It was accepted then, with the same excitement as the D850 today. Good luck on your choice.
