Ok I am ready to move up from my d3300 dx to a Nikon used. I want to get way better quality pictures. I shot lots of subjects I do macro-landscape-flowers and animals I like to shot tight. I hope to find one of there lighter ones. Looking at d800 - d800e- or maybe d810. Any pointer of suggestions would be most appreciated. I am retired and on a limited income so may have to consider lens for it at a later date since I need to sell my dx lens first. you all and have a great turkey day. Thank you Diane

ps. Should I wait for Nikon to come out with a mirrowless . I haven't looked at these much. is there one with a longer lens?? or one you really like??

I do not think the D8xx series camera would get you way better quality pictures. I think you need to look at what that you don't like in your pictures and figure out the cause of them. Then you can determine what to do.

Lenses will provide the better quality images, and FX lens are better. The D-8xx series of cameras are certainly much better, but don’t discount the D-610/D-750. With good FX lenses, they’ll work well.

That is a great idea. I started with a D700 and after 6 years moved to a D800e. The 800 was purchased from B and H used. The price was a fraction of the new price. Used from a reputable dealer would be a great way to go. You're heading in the right direction.

I am not saying the OP shouldn't get a better camera but to get way better quality pictures the OP has to look else where.

A long time ago when I got into photography my uncle suggested I take an art class. I did. It helped a lot even with my Brownie, which I still have.

The newer cameras are faster and so forth but technical specs aside that's all they offer.

Upgrade to a D800e or a D810. They are incredible cameras and will give you years of amazing photos. Since they have internal motors there is a large inventory of used lenses you can choose from. I purchased a Sigma 170-500mmm lens for 350 and a Nikon 70-300mm lens for $85 both give me sharp, incredible photos.

Hi dB, I was just thinking that I would like to get a D850 yesterday, but the price is a little intimidating for a fellow retiree, so I thought maybe if I sell my D800e first, that might lessen the financial punch. And here you are asking about cameras. My D800e is hobbyist used, (by me, who bought it New) so it’s in pristine condition, almost like New. I say almost because I have probably 15,000 actuation on it but that’s a guess because I don’t know how to check, and with 15,000 actuation, something must show something, somewhere that it has been touched by human hands, at least. I even have all the original packaging, and, of course, it too looks like new. It would come with a Nikon grip and 3 batteries.

If you’re interested, I see you are in Arizona, I’m in LA and would be willing to meet halfway so you could see it with your own eyes. I’m not actively trying to sell it anywhere and I really like the camera, but the one thing the D850 has that I would like that the 800e doesn’t is built-in WiFi, because when I shoot portraits I like to shoot thethered, and for some reason the D800e doesn’t always stay tethered to Lightroom (I’ve actually heard this is common).

As far as price, I’ll be fair with you, so please be fair with me, in return.

Your D3300 is a recent camera and is capable of very high quality photos. If you're not getting high quality photos then there are some things to check.

1) Often you will get camera and lens combinations that will back focus or rear focus. You can check that with devices like the DataColor SpyderLensCal.

2) Are you using the .jpeg files out of the camera? If so, go through all of the picture controls - standard, neutral, vivid, monochrome and increase the sharpening to level 6. Nikon sets the default sharpening very low at level 3.

3) What aperture settings do you use? Lenses are generally their sharpest when stopped down a little from their maximum aperture.

most of my pictures are with a p900 and a little sony. maybe I should use the d3300 more often I have 2 good lens for it. thank you
