Problem Printing with Apple’s High Sierra OS

I installed High Sierra (Apple’s latest operating system) this week. There are material changes to the Photos app. One that is a real problem for me is that my Canon Pixma Pro-10 printer can no longer print from Photos. I contacted Apple Support, which did its best to no avail. We ascertained (via the Canon website) that this printer will work with Sierra, but that there is, as yet, no driver for High Sierra.

I think everyone using an Apple computer should check his or her printer’s website to determine if there is a driver available for High Sierra.

This and many other issues can attest to why tech people never update initially. They wait until about XX.XX.3 is available and most glitches are worked out.
Thanks for this information.

Agreed!!
Been my experience that being the first person to get the latest "toy", means you are the "tester" for the company that brought you that latest "toy" you just had to have. Reputable companies in my opinion, do their best to get their products to market with built in reliability. However, glitches do happen and as an example, just look at the glitches the global car companies have when releasing a new product onto the market. Camera companies and software/computer companies are not immune to this problem.
If you must have the "latest and the greatest" of any product, you must be prepared and accept the fact you have become a "beta tester" for that company's product.

To be honest, I think this is probably a Canon issue. Canon appear to be very slow to update their drivers. Indeed, they often never issue updates once they have released a new version of the printer. This has applied to printers and scanners in the past rendering older models useless unless you can find a suitable generic driver.

You should always update your Operating System as it brings many benefits in performance and security. It’s not as if High Sierra is new. It’s been out for a few months and was announced much earlier in the year. Developers have had the chance to work with beta versions over the ensuing months.

I regret I think it’s more likely that Canon would prefer you to buy a new printer, than any failing at Apple!

I think you may be right. If so, this printer goes to eBay and I go to Epson.

Or does Epson play the same game?

I don’t know about Edson as I’ve used Canon printers and scanners for ages. Others can confirm or deny but I think all the printer folks make money out of selling ink and new kit, rather than keeping old units going.

My printer is still going, but my scanner has issues. I use an old driver but it is loosing some utility. I now only use it for scanning slides and have to switch it off and on after each scan! When I need to scan documents I use my iPhone as it’s faster and more accurate.

I have to confess that my printer gets less and less use in this digital world.

Ksocha Apple does not write drivers. It is Canon that you need to contact to get the latest driver.

However the Canon Pro 10 Series is supported and also it has a recent update. Check the info at this site:
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201465

So you might want to check to make sure you have the latest update to High Sierra.

I have an Epson printer and just upgraded to Sierra. No problems printing. Epson frequently upgrades software for printers.

I bought a new I Mac. I upgraded to the newest operating system and when I tried to change the print media in the print dialogue box in Photoshop I couldn't change the media type from Luster 260 to Mat. I couldn't print with any media other then Luster 260. It seems that when you upgrade to a new operating system on an Apple computer it creates issues with printing because Apple controls the printing issues. I had had this problem once before with the same results. Once this issue is on your computer it cannot be fixed and the only way to resolve it is to get a new hard drive and start all over installing the drivers and not upgrading the Apple operating system. Because I had an I Mac Apple could not replace the hard drive because that is wired in on an I Mac so Apple had to give me another I Mac. Everything is working now but because of the printing issues I will NEVER upgrade the operating system on my computer, too many issues.

Absolutely true!early adopters get shot in the back with unexpected bugs.

Printer companies are notorious for abandoning their products after a few years

I am not joking, this issue really happened to me twice. Recently I purchased a Mac Pro and there was a problem with an incompatibility with a new monitor and the Mac Pro so Apple gave me another Mac Pro and the monitor company, Ben Q gave me another monitor with the same results, the monitor was not comparable with the computer. After the second round I returned the monitor and Apple decided to give me an I Mac to see if that could resolve my problems. The I Mac was just fine until I updated the operating system. When the operating system was updated this caused a glitch with the print dialogue box in Photoshop because evidently Apple controls this particular part of Photoshop. I am using Photoshop CS6, not Lightroom. So when the upgrade was installed it caused a glitch in Photoshop where I couldn't change the print media from Luster 260 to any other media. As I do custom printing for a living this was totally unacceptable. I actually had the same problem about 8 years ago with an older Mac Pro and the only solution was to get a new hard drive because once this glitch was in the hard drive the only way to get rid of it was to get a new hard drive and not access anything off of the old hard drive because it could migrate to the new hard drive. Well I forgot about this issue and I upgraded the I Mac to the latest operating system, with the blessing of the Apple tech people, and there was the same issue, I couldn't change the print media in the print dialogue box from Luster 260 to any other setting. I took the I Mac back to Apple in Santa Monica and I showed them the issue and they couldn't believe the problem existed until they checked my history with apple and in clear writing was the first problem I had 8 years ago. Because the hard drives are wired in with the I Mac Apple couldn't change the hard drive so they gave me another I Mac. With the new computer everything works fine but I will not for any reason upgrade the operating system on this new I Mac. Now you can say that I am joking but I went through this issue twice and I have had many problems with Apple computers but Apple actually stood by their product and worked with me to get things working again. What reason could I possibly have for posting a joking post? You think that you know everything but you don't. Please don't accuse someone of joking With an issue such as this, I am just trying to alert Apple users that there can be a problem when you upgrade the operating system. I see that you live in Southern California and I will be happy to prove that this issue exists. I can furnish absolute proof that I had this issue with my computer.

Problems with print drivers are common. I've dealt with them on Macs and Windows machines since 1989.

Typically, Apple or Microsoft updates the OS, but Epson or Canon doesn't release an update for their printer. OUCH. That's worst case scenario... the printer becomes obsolete.

Other times, the user's drive has become partly corrupted. Often, Disk Utility or another disk fixing application can straighten things out.

In older versions of OS X, Disk Utility could repair the UNIX permissions on Apple Installer-installed files. Repairing permissions on the startup drive OFTEN fixed problems with Epson drivers.

These days, deleting the current driver, resetting the printing system, and reinstalling the latest driver is often the solution.

Sometimes a printer needs a firmware update, which then makes it necessary to, you guessed it, delete the current print driver, reset the printing system, and install a newer driver... My office printer, an Epson WF-3640, has had three firmware updates and I've used it less than a year. I had to do that update/delete/reset/install cycle again, recently, when I updated this iMac to Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.1.

It's all part of living with machines... NO upgrades shall go unpunished.

Ok fair enough. It’s good to alert other Apple users.
I thought you were joking because you said “you will never upgrade your OS again”. Never is a long time.

And when you replied to me with “You think that you know everything but you don't” I experienced that as a rude comment. Here is my response.

I dont’ know everything but I know enough to back up my entire system before performing OS updates (and other big software updates).

I keep my system up to date with the latest software and since 2005, only once have I had to restore from backup after an OS update due to a problem.
