Impossible? Perhaps not. A 55-200 4.0/5.6 GII VR kit lens (DX), on my D750 is just (well, almost) such a combination. With image area on 1.5 (DX) crop factor and field of view of 300mm there is no vignetting as expected. But on 1.2 crop factor, there still is no vignetting but with a slight darkening in the corners, and an effective FOV of 240mm. On FX, full frame, there is vignetting out to about 110mm. The rest of the way to 200mm is clear. Not bad for a kit lens IMHO!

Comments?

Small cheap Nikon FX lens and rated as one of Nikon's 10 best by Ken Rockwell (if you put any stock in his reviews):
Nikkon AF 28-200 mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED
Size: 2.7" D X 2.8" L and 13 oz. weight

Seems to cover most of the focal lenghts you use better than the 55- 200.
I keep the 28-200 on my D610 about 80% of the time and am happy with the results.

Happy shooting, chase

I feel much better using FX lenses on DX rather than the other way around. I purchased a 70-200 f4 with VR for my D500. The lens has been pretty well regarded by people like Thom Hogan. I paid 1k. (used) and feel it is a super value. Another option is a recent version of the 70-300 4.5-5.6 VR - you should be able to get this done for around 700 new and less used. A used nikkor 135mm manual focus is a terrific value in term of image quality but not so hot for sports. One of the great things about shooting Nikon is the lens system. You don't have to deal with the problems raised by putting dx on FX.

Good Luck and have fun,

Allen

The D750 has an Auto Crop feature, which changes the image area on the sensor to 24x16. There shouldn't be any vignetting with the feature set to the "ON" position, and using DX lenses.

The older 28-200 you mention is a "D" lens not "G."

Nikon 28-300 is within reason

He said small and cheap. The 28-300 is neither.

There was a G version too.
No VR.

KEH has an "ugly" one HERE for $168.
