Why hide travel cam logos?

In a recent link provided by another UHH member the Nat Geo writer recommended several times that travelers cover the camera logos. I'm not sure why he felt this was so important. Do you follow this practice?

I can easily see the reason for this suggestion. I carry my camera equipment in a relatively non-descript bag, for the same reason.

I haven't travelled much with my gear but am now retired and may be doing more of it. I have heard more horror stories of cameras being stolen from hotel rooms than from locations where a photographer may be using it. Do you think covering the logos would make a camera less conspicuous, less attractive?

I don't leave any camera/computer/electronics equipment in my room when traveling - that goes with me in the vehicle... I travel in a SUV so I have a painters tarp in the back to cover everything to keep it out of sight and also keep the sunlight off of it.
As far as covering the logo on the camera itself, it depends on where you are - recent travels at Mt Rushmore, Devils Tower, Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and San Diego showed me that there are many tourists out there with name brand cameras and high $ lens so what I have is blends right in... If you are in scarcely populated areas with low to poverty level economics, there is a higher chance of your system looking attractive to the criminal element - just my thoughts...

Once, when planning a trip to a country that I thought might have more street crime than most (it didn’t), I bought a neoprene stretchy camera case to carry my camera while walking around town. It covers the camera with a mid length zoom attached. I now carry it all the time, it hides what is covered, offers light rain resistance and is easily removed and stuffed in a jacket pocket. Bought mine at B&H.

A while back one member stated that he carried a pink diaper bag... have a pamper sticking out the top and no one will bother you.

It seems pretty silly to cover the logo. Most camera companies make everything from modestly-priced cameras to high-end gear. A thief is not likely to know the difference - they just know that a "big camera" might fetch some decent money from their fence or a sleazy pawn shop. When traveling I have a nondescript camera case.

Agree. But I also shoot in inclement weather and tear that label off my mattresses.

In my travels, I have encountered a handful of traveling companions who covered trademarks on their cameras. One story raised the hair on the back of my neck, so now I do the same with black electrical tape on my camera. Thieves know more than you think they do in many instances. The guy who had nothing covered on his camera was the one who was ripped off-at gun point.

I cover the logo of certain smaller cameras of mine, using black electricians tape. Why? Because I do a lot of street photography, and it helps keep the camera stealthy, for those candid street shots.
