FZ1000 is the one I was looking at. I don't have any experience with it, but it seems like pretty decent camera with 1" sensor, Leica optics, zoom 400, viewfinder, Raw, 20MP, 4k etc. Too bad no store in 250 mile radius had it on shelf for me to test drive it.
Robert Kincaid used a Nikon F. I think you can get those for under $1000.

And, as all bridge cameras is really worth about 20% of that. My pocket Panasonic SX7 (24-250) purchased open box for $79 three years ago takes way better IQ than my Fugifilm bridge did at any field of view setting and both with the 1/2.5" (smallest common camera sensor), so after two weeks of shooting it I returned it for refund to Costco and got back my $300. That was the first and last time to buy a wannabe for me. You'll soon regret purchasing a bridge. The Nikon 3400 with two kit lenses is selling right now for $450-$525 and who knows what Black Friday will bring. I know many camera retailers are sending me emails for an early BF sale on now. Start by searching something like "black friday 2017 camera". Good luck and welcome to a new way of seeing.
OK. I don't mind appearing stupid, 'cause that is how I learn "stuff". So, that in mind, what, pray tell, is a "bridge camera?"

It is a camera that "bridges" pocket cameras and DSLR cameras. A Bridge camera has most of the features of a DSLR but usually smaller and lighter. A Bridge camera does not have an interchangeable lens. A Bridge camera usually has a smaller sensor than a DSLR. Bridge cameras are generally smaller and lighter than DSLRs . Bridge cameras may have as high MP as a DSLR. They all have their plusses and minuses. Pocket and bridge cameras are not subject to dust on the sensor. Pocket and bridge cameras are not as versatile as DSLRs. Some Bridge cameras have zooms that go from 24mm to 1300mm and then some. I did not mention mirrorless cameras such as Sony a6000. Most Mirrorless cameras are as versatile as DSLRs in my photo L to R ...pocket, bridge, DSLR.
Sony RX100ii used for around $450. Or you can move up to the iii, or iv. It's a true pocket camera with 1" sensor and zoom lens. If you going to go small, be sure it can fit in your pocket.
Thank you for the response. Now I understand! So, my Sony DSC_HX1 would be a bridge camera between ... well, my cell phone I suppose, and my new (used) Cannon Rebel XT DSLR.
Again, thanks !!

Costco has a Panasonic camera with a Leica lens for about $350.00.
