Thank you and i'll keep you all in the loop. But do I feel dumb. I know a guy on a trip to Central America. His camera dropped and landed on the only rock in the area.... As Forest Gump says: "chit happens"

If you’re dumb, so am I. You are not alone! Lol

For that type of repair, only Nikon in LA or NY.
I have used them, great experience!
Good luck!

Without any hesitation, I would send it to Nikon. Sorry for your loss, and Best of Luck!

But since they outsource to their authorized repair centers ...

When you put the information in on the site they will give you repair centers for the item. If it can only be repaired by Nikon it will be noted. I sent one lens in a few years ago and requested in house repair. It was not repaired in house. It was a place authorized for most of the major brands. I only found out by the UPS tracking number where it was picked up. Nikon did not even acknowledge my request.

Hopefully when they start concentrating on their higher grade equipment they will not be bogged down with so many repairs and will be able to do a higher percentage in house. Concentrating on the higher end is supposed to be part of the restructuring plan.

Hello,

Feeling like a jerk today. I was at the Marritt Island Wildlife Refuge today and had set my Nikon D500 with the 200-500mm lens on a small table out on a deck near the water. Long story short... I had looked at something in the opposite direction of the camera and a huge gust of wind blew the camera and lens off the table (it was attached to the deck). The camera and lens landed on the deck floor and the lens snapped off the D500. Both camera and lens is broken where they attached and who knows what else might have broken...

So I'm looking into insurance with AMX which I used to pay for the gear and I have filled out the service information with Nikon USA and will look into home owners insurance. Sure wish I had purchased camera gear insurance now...

Would you send a broken camera and lens to Nikon USA or to an authorized service center? I think Colonial Photo and Hobby in Orlando is an authorize Nikon service center where i could take them. Camera what purchased there and lens from Adarama. I can take it to Colonial or send it to Nikon USA or frankly to any service center that might help me out but I think in screwed.

I wonder how much it will end up custing to have the camera and lens fixed...

Thank you,

I know you must have been sick having seen your camera and lens drop from the wind. And a D500 and a 200-500mm lens are not cheap equipment either. Sending it to an authorized Nikon Repair facility should be OK. Since Nikon no longer sends spare parts to none other than an authorized Nikon Repair facility. I hope your repair won't break the bank. Good luck.

I had a Nikon N90 with Sigma 18-200mm zoom lens mounted on a travel tripod blow off a cliff top location at Harper's Ferry VA so I feel your pain. You at least recovered your equipment I could just watch bounce it way down the cliff face until it was out of site. Totally gone, the Rangers were no help. Fortunately my home owner's policy rider for camera equipment covered it.

Hi - sure sorry about your mishap!
I have used this place for years, and find them less expensive than Nikon. They work on all cameras, and will examine the camera/lens and give you a price before working on it. I don't remember if they charge to examine it - $50 or so, possibly.

Also, if by any chance they cannot repair the lens, a friend in my local camera club is selling his 1-month-old Nikon 200-500 that he bought for ONE week-long trip.
Let me know. I'm sure he will take mercy on you and give you a good price.

Did it happen during Irma? I guess strong winds are needed to do what happened to camera and lens since that combo is heavy.
My first choice would be to send them to Nikon. Only they could tell you how much the repairs will be.

As my audio mixing friends like to say: “it’s all good”. Sending them to Nikon in the morning. I’ll pay the price to fix them. I’ve learned my lesson the hard way and will use a shoulder strap.

Yes very heavy and I was surprised when it happened. But I did have a tripod mounting bracket on the camera so was not sitting flat.

I’m going to look into my home owners policy tomorrow when I call them. If the camera rig and follen the opposite direction I would have had to swim with the alligators to retrieve it..,

That would have been a waste. With the camera down, no pictures.

A good insurance policy is to invest in a RapidR quick-release camera strap system, or similar product, and keep that $4,000 hanging on your hip.

FYI.... This past wednesday I received my (almost) one year old D500 back from Nikon service in NY. I sent it in because it was flashing Err and locking up (refusing to fire, etc.). There was an issue with the battery contacts in the grip, which I had also sent in, which was repaired. The camera and sensor were cleaned and returned exactly 8 days after I gave it to UPS. Absolutely no issues getting this done and a prompt job at that. I did get a bit of a rush being an NPS member, but I have never had any issues with Nikon's Service Department. The repair information on their website does usually run a day behind, but I'd prefer speed of repair to speed of paperwork. They will be getting my D5 around year end for a general cleaning and check as well as two lenses, one for firmware upgrade and my trusty, and old, 35/F2 for the usual, sticky aperture blades. I have no complaints. Best of luck.
