I bought the Canon Pro 10 shipped and no tax for $179.00 and it came with ink and 50 sheets of 13x19 paper. Sounds strange that no ink comes with the Canon. I'd give them a call. David

Thanks! I went on the B&H site and the printer does not come with any ink. I am not sure, but I believe most printers do. It has been a long time since I have purchased a printer. I just purchased $56 Genuine ink for my Epson. I have had it for a long time. So long I can print on CD's. I play the piano and used to send recordings to friends and family. Thanks again for this info.

It does come with ink and it’s a great printer, especially with the rebate. There is almost always a rebate program available for Canon printers and the final price varies between $100-$150, depending on the particular program and usually includes a 50 sheet pack of Canon 13x19 glossy paper. The downside, which has been mentioned, is that a full replacement set of 8 OEM cartridges costs as much as a new printer which includes cartridges, so as strange as it seems, it often makes sense to just trade up if you need all 8 cartridges. Burkphoto is correct that printing at home, while convenient, won’t save you money vs printing outside.

If you need a general purpose printer and also want to print photos, purchasing a photo printer plus a general purpose printer/scanner/Fax will typically give you the most performance for the money if you have the space for both. You can actually purchase a decent general purpose printer in the $100-125 range, and added to the rebated cost of the above-mentioned printer, you’re in the $250 range for both. Btw, while I swore I would not buy another HP general purpose printer (due to the ink cost per print), they have a really cost effective printer ink program causing me to buy yet another HP for general (not Photo) use. They charge $2.99 per month for 50 prints per month with a small cost per print if you go over. The printer communicates with HP and automatically orders new ink as needed which arrives via USPS. They also send you a pair of cartridges to keep on-site, so you’re never without an extra set of cartridges. When you figure that a pair of B&W and color cartridges costs $40-50 and won’t begin to print 600 prints, it’s an excellent deal.

I purchased a Canon Pro-100 on a sweet deal - $395 with a $250 rebate! Came with a full set of starter ink cartridges, and after a bit of researching on YouTube I can now easily and satisfactorily refill my own ink cartridges with replacement inks from Precision Colors. If you are looking for an inexpensive and quality alternative to high-end photo labs or going the Costco or Walmart route, I can highly recommend this product. If you are looking for the highest quality and resolution you can obtain to sell or market your work, a pro photo lab is usually the best choice. But for printing your wall-hanger photos and displaying them in your home or providing them to friends, the Pro-100 is a great little printer. Enjoy!

I, too, can vouch for Precision Colors.

I use a calibrated monitor to adjust my images, and then I take them to Costco, and when I get them back, they look just like the images on my screen, and they are cheap ($6.99 for a 16x20. I don't think you can buy the paper that cheap). Many years ago I used to have a color printer, and it would take me over an hour to get it calibrated each time I wanted to use it. I would wind up with a half a dozen color correction prints just to print one or two prints. After I had spent hundreds of dollars on ink, I finally tried Costco and never looked back. Also, how many 16x20 prints can you print at home in the hour I wait for my six 16x20 prints?

I love printing at home. Total control and I can do it anytime. I use an Epson P800 and have a separate Epson all in one for all my other printing needs. It’s one more step in nursing that picture into the best it can be. I try not to look at the cost. Order everything online and just DO IT when I need too. Nothing i need is available locally in Juneau, Alaska. Go with a dedicated photo printer that you can nurse and love.

I am thinking of getting a wireless photo printer. I have a few questions. Are there any members that print their own? The present best printer I can get for around or under at $400. Should I get only a photo printer or a all in one? Ink is expensive, but we have a store not far from us that sells refilled ink. I have used refilled before will poor success. Though this is close to ten years ago. My own personal feeling is when prints are made at Walgreens, Costcos or practically anyone they then have your photos to do as they please. I looked in the UHH search section and there is no new information concerning printers. I also feel I can print in my home without having to take and wait. Thanks for any help. Gregger

I have the Canon Pro9500MkII and have been using it for several years. I find it works very well for me. I use OEM inks and OEM paper unless there is a special need. I would replace it with the latest Canon equivalent printer in a minute. I use a small Canon inkjet printer for smaller prints to save on ink costs and find it excellent as well. Quantity needs and prints beyond 11 by 17 go the Costco Photo. Upload the file, get the prints at the local store or if more convenient by well wrapped and protected mailings to my home.

I agree that the Photo Printer should not be used for everyday printing as it is too expensive. I have Samsung ML-2955 B&W printer that was less than $100.00 on sale and the cartridge is about $70.00 but it is about 8+ inches long and 3inches in diameter and last for ever.

I bought a Canon iP8720 printer three years ago when it first came out and am quite satisfied with it, as it prints with six inks one which is gray for high quality B&W up to 13" X 19". The cost was $275 and I chose it over the comparable Epson. It' one of the best consumer printers available and having printed 400-500 8.5" X 11" and a few 13" X 19" so far find them acceptable to present to my customers. Better print quality than it produces is a Canon costing $1,000 w/rebate. It's the next step up I'll be taking. INK! I don't need no Canon inks, not at their pricing. All inks are produced in China. I tried one set I bought from an ebay vendor and there's no difference, PERIOD; so I bought a 10 change quantity of all inks from an ebay vendor for less than the cost of one full set of the Canon brand. That's where the printer manufacturer's make bank, on the ten time markup. To heck with their greed. I vote with my meager dollars.

I am pretty sure that the Canon Pro100 comes with Ink, mine did. I have heard that the supplied inks are not as full as the replacement tanks. I don't know how you can see this. Every printer I have purchased came with ink. I love the Pro 100.

I use an Epson ET-4550 for all my printing and get excellent results. The ink supply comes in large bottles and is much less expensive than the small cartridges. I also use Publisher and place several cropped images on an 8 1/2 x 11 inch sheet instead of printing 4 x 6 prints. I've also found that using premium presentation paper produces very nice images. One NEVER saves money by printing at home. Economy is a completely false hope! Printers are very inexpensive compared to paper and ink.

I agree that there are good reasons for doing it yourself but they are not without penalties.

I print infrequently so most of my ink is wasted for head cleaning. Its so much less expensive and convenient to use a service. The print media options are much greater as well and the turn-a-round time is very good.

Richard, I am beginning to think you are correct. I have a Epson Artisan 700 that I had not printed from in several months other than BW. I just went back to replace
an ink cartridge for it won't work with one color missing. When I say several months I mean possibly six. I just happened to have the one cartridge I was missing. I replaced the cartridge, did a head cleaning, and it printed fine. The date on the ink was 2008. I have had this computer for years. My wife said what if it goes out and you have a printer that will print only in colors? So both of you have answered my question. That does not mean all the info I have received from other members has gone to waste. I learned a lesson before making a mistake. Thanks to you and to all. I still may get another all in one printer in hopes of printing photos that she enjoys framing. There has to be some all in one that prints photo well, inexpensive ink, and durable. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU. Gregger

Do you happen to know how expensive the ink happens to be?

Ink can be purchased in individual containers (the color you need) for $16.95 or about $124.00 for the eight containers.
