I would prefer to pay an appropriate fee for a 'Major' update every two-three years or so versus being Nickeled & Dimed to death,

I am not at all critical of your decision, and encourage you to do what works for you. Just wanted to shed some light on the LR/PS package prior to the Creative Cloud. I bought version 3 of LR and PS CS5 as a bundle when they were new. They cost over $900.00. There was a 12-18 month update cycle in place at the time, and those updates cost nearly $300/year. I have been elated with Creative Cloud. :-)

Thanks Bruce for the info, appreciate the comments. Glad its working for you....since my personal requirements don't require the need for 'Cloud' services and I don't want to pay extra for storage, I'll stay with LR6 and look at other options if need be...top of the day to ya pardner, finally a day here in Florida without wind & rain 🙂

For $9.99 a month you get Light room, Photoshop, and Bridge always updated and taking up no space in your computer. This combination will do more and has more features more than any other program. If you do not like it, do not subscribe to it. Quit your complaining.

No reason to be nasty about this; and I was not complaining. I was simply discussing an issue as the site is designed to do. Perhaps you don't understand that. I'm normally a fan of Adobe, but when something is renamed "classic" I think the writing is on the wall: I'm hoping that is not the case. I never complained about the Adobe program being one I had to sign up for, I simply want it to remain that way and the program to remain in its, more or less, current state. I am Adobe certified and teach the program and I love using the program and want to be able to continue to do that.

Installation of the Classic update uninstalls the older version of LRCC. The first time you open the new app, it requires you to update the database (catalog file). The existing catalog is copied (preserving your current catalog) and the copy is updated to the new structure.

I didn’t know that. Thank you. But it remains on my hard drive, does it not, Bruce?

If you are referring to the older version of LR, then 'No', it doesn't. It is uninstalled and the new app takes its place.

Your original catalog file remains on your computer, but a copy is made and that copy is updated to the new data structure. It remains so that, should you re-install the older version of LR, you have a catalog.

You cannot open the new catalog with the old application, and if you try to open the old catalog with the new application, it requires an update to that catalog before it opens it.

Moving forward was genuinely painless. I updated my desktop and laptop (with the LR Classic app) in 15-20 minutes.

Thank you, Bruce. I’ve been wondering about backups. How does one back up a cloud-based system? Do you treat the cloud like any other storage device and back up to an external drive?

Creative Cloud isn't "cloud-based". Your subscription allows you to use the Creative Cloud desktop app to manage which Adobe products you want to install on your PC. EVERYTHING is installed on your PC, so all you need to do is backup your PC. The 'cloud' is used only to download the apps for installation.

The new Lightroom CC app (the new app that takes the name of the older product) has functionality to manage the images you have put in the cloud, allowing you to view/edit images anywhere, on nearly any device. So, those images will reside on an Adobe server on the internet. However, those images originated from your installed Lightroom, whose images reside on your PC's hard drive, so again, just backup your PC.

I go through this explanation, hoping you are not referring to "cloud backup systems" such as CrashPlan that allow for an off-site backup of your data to a server on the internet. If this is what you are referring to, please say so, and I'll change tracks. :-)

We just returned to Kentucky from Treasure Island week before last. It was plenty hot while we were there. :-) Had some rain, too.

No, you understood me, Bruce. I can’t overstate how much you clarified things for me. Thank you.
