Hi everyone,
I am expecting a delivery from UPS today for a Canon eos 77D from Adorama. The cost was $799.00 and upon reviewing the tracking information it doesn’t mention a signature being required. It seems to me that any item with that dollar amount would require a signature upon delivery. Is it me, or does that seem odd? Luckily I am in a position that I can watch out for the delivery today, but if I wasn’t, I would really be concerned. Has anyone else had this experience?

I believe the magic number is whether the package is insured for over $1,000. Over $1,000 and a signature is required; under and no signature is required. You can take comfort in the fact that it is insured and if you don't get it, the insurance kicks in. I have shipped a number of items and that seems to be the requirement by the insurance company at least for UPS. Adorama and B&H insure their camera deliveries no matter the cost and with UPS, I think the base level is $500, but the insurance is always the value of the contents. I would not lose any sleep over it. You should be fine.

Check the threshold item cost for signature requirement. I don't what it is, but my order through UPS needed a signature and my item was priced at $949.00.

I ordered from B&H the other day. B&H sent them on two separate packages. Package 1, containing a flash stand, no signature required from UPS. Package 2, camera flash, compact flash card and reader, and lens replacement foot, signature required from UPS. I like signing for my items but B&H made an error this time. I paid for a 2-day delivery but Package 2 (signature required) is being delivered on the 3rd day when I'm not home. Ouch!

The only time I have to sign for anything, it's because the package is from Russia, Poland, the UK....... most stuff from the USA, I don't. When I send a package, I always have tracking. But I sent one to Australia and the tracking for a small first class package was $14.95....the contents were worth $3, so I skipped it. Nyms

Usually, when ordering an item, the buyer can indicate whether a signature is required or not. My experience with UPS is that they leave the package at the top of the driveway at the garage door in a totally exposed location, even though a covered front porch is only about 10 steps away.

I'm sure its up to the shipper to either require or not require a signature. I know when I got my 5DM3 from Canon, a signature was required from Fed-EX. I couldn't change that fact, no matter how hard I tried.
Since I was worried about the package being left outside, I was able to have the package delivered to the local FedEx office and when I picked it up, I had to provide proof of who I was and sign for it.

I work for a UPS Store, and thought I could add some insight into this discussion. The SHIPPER determines whether or not a package requires a signature, NOT UPS or the driver. The driver has no idea if your package is worth $10 or $10,000. So, if your package is valuable to you, ask your shipper to request a signature (they may charge you more for this,as UPS does charge extra for having the driver wait at your door for a signature).

If you know you won't be home to receive a valued package, you can arrange to have it dropped at a local UPS Store. Contact UPS at 800-PICK-UPS (800-742-5877) to do this.

First of all, you work in the store and only see the shipping side of the equation. The fact is that UPS overloads drivers so much that they do not usually do what we pay UPS for. Ringing my doorbell, running away and returning my package to the depot on the grounds that no one was home rather than giving me time to get to the door and sign for a package is not what the shipper pays for. Not delivering packages to the door of the addressee is not what the shipper pays for. Consistently dropping packages in plain view so that thieves can see them is not what the shipper pays for. THAT IS NOT THE FAULT OF THE CUSTOMER, IT IS THE FAULT OF UPS. In summary, your employer CONSISTENTLY DOES NOT PROVIDE THE QUALITY OF SERVICE customers pay for and are entitled to because they overload their drivers and emphasize speed over quality of service.

In reading all your posts about getting packages I somehow feel lucky. No delivery people are allowed to go to your apartment door to make a delivery. They must leave the package in the lobby with the doorman. As you come home he lets you know if you have a delivery. If you are away it is secured in a locked room and a notice is placed in your mailbox. Seems to work.

I just bought a king size bed from Casper. It came in several boxes, three of which were VERY heavy. Casper offered a choice on their checkout system to require a signature on delivery. It did not cost me anything more. I met the driver at the truck and he carted the boxes to the correct entrance (we have four) for the easiest installation.
