Great shots. That's not a place I would choose to be.

Thanks Jerry, it is a choice that requires some deliberate and high energy behavior....I'm safe.

One can sure tell that chunks of the face of Half Dome have been sliding into the valley for eons. It's really cool to see those figures in the last two images,
they convey a great sense of scale.

Thanks for the visit Bushpilot. You are correct about the dynamics of these huge granite faces. There was a large event on El Capitan this season with fatal results. Thanks for the kind words.

You could not get me to stand there! Great shots, thanks for sharing.

The person in white is bending over and looking down. I can loose my balance and fall over in my kitchen doing that! Thanks for the visit Madman!

Yikes! This a moment to be glad you have a long lens.

Yikes indeed! Many folks make this climb but like my grandmother once said "I don't believe I left anything up there".

Come on, you're a madman, of course you would! Seriously, I have been up the cables on the back side of Half Dome several times and I am 69 and find it neither technical or strenuous. This is my daughter and a friend from a couple of years ago which you can see a flat stand point where most who hike up there take their turn on that point. This is where the people in the photos are standing.

Compared to the technical requirements of climbing a wall you are correct. But I (and I'm sure the N. Park service) would disagree with your breezy statement that it is not strenuous. If we had a buck for each of the unfortunate folks who underestimated this climb....we would have a large pile of bucks! The traffic jams these people create in the cables can be dangerous and agonizing.

I was in Yosemite last week (note the smoke) and made these photos of Half Dome from Glacier Point. The first is at 18mm, the second is at 250mm and the third is big crop. One of our more thoughtful photographers here at UHH, minniev, has done an excellent job of demonstrating the value of little human figures included in a photo to demonstrate scale. These folks certainly do that and also introduce a feeling of tension, al least for me! It takes great effort to get up there and just one foolish mistake to make a very quick return trip to the valley floor! Please try the downloads.

beautiful shots rockdog. i don't see how they can climb up there and not fall...it's amazing.

Hi MT! thanks for the kind words. The climb up the back side is accomplished each year by thousands and it is a splendid thing to do....probably!
