I was in Yosemite last week (note the smoke) and made these photos of Half Dome from Glacier Point. The first is at 18mm, the second is at 250mm and the third is big crop. One of our more thoughtful photographers here at UHH, minniev, has done an excellent job of demonstrating the value of little human figures included in a photo to demonstrate scale. These folks certainly do that and also introduce a feeling of tension, al least for me! It takes great effort to get up there and just one foolish mistake to make a very quick return trip to the valley floor! Please try the downloads.

Great shots and of course you are correct about including people in for a recognition of scale. We have just returned from Switzerland and it is hard to imagine the height of the mountains in the photos if there are no people included

Wow, Phil! The first is a great shot of Half Dome. I like everything about it. The close up with the person standing up there gives the whole series perspective!

Great series, you are so right about including people. The smoke in your images is not bad, I looked every day at the webcams but the valley floor looks very smoky.

Great series, thanks for sharing...
We were there the middle of Sep but Glacier Point was closed due to fires and the park was really hazy...

Pardon my ignorance, but what does it mean to to introduce a little human figure?

The addition of something of familiar size is used to show scale. The size of a person gives an idea of the size of the area shown.

Hi Carol, I spent the morning that these were taken watching climbers on El Capitan. Yosemite's vastness can make us all look like ants. This is the top 1/3 of El Cap's 3,000 ft. face. Thanks for the visit!

Thanks Mike. These were taken on Tue of last week. We were back in Hetch Hetchy on Wed AM and the smoke was beginning to invade that valley. Driving down that afternoon into the Sacto-San Joaquin valley the smoke frightening and it became worse in the Livermore tri-valley area. When we drove into the East Bay hills our bay area air was a little clearer by comparison. We have two dear friends who have lost their homes in Napa-Sonoma fires. Our home has been under a red flag alert on and off with these winds. We need rain to begin to shut down this horrible fire season.
I appreciate your kind comment and visit.

Hi Shellback, thank you for the visit. The air quality has been miserable on and off all summer. I appreciate your kind words.

Hello and welcome to UHH vonzip. dividrb has given you a good answer. In the cropped third picture there are two tiny people looking over the edge of one very large rock.
