So for my 30th birthday I received a Canon Rebel T6. It came with a telephoto lens, a macro, wide angle.....I mean, there's stuff I don't even know what the technical names of it are. I'll take my time learning the ins and outs of everything that came soon, but for now I just want to try out the zoom and focus around town for the day. So what are the basics of getting this damn thing to zoom properly and why does it keep wanting to tell me it won't focus? Lol......thanks for helping a lady out y'all. Haha

Read The *Fine* Manual. Yes, it’s in ‘Jenglish’, but if you study each page, in sequence, start to finish, and play along with camera in hand, it will make sense by the third reading.

The same goes for the wonderful books listed above. Bryon Peterson and Tony Northrop will take you beyond the beginnings.

MOST importantly, USE your camera. Your results will improve over time, as you MIX knowledge with experience and critically examine your results.

I put it in a pillow case and dip it into the toilet for about 15 seconds

Make sure and flush the toilet before dipping the camera!

Welcome to the 'Hog' Kate. get this book, you won't ever regret it and it will tell you all you need to know about your new camera. I'm a Canon shooter myself and have his books for all of my bodies.

Way, way cheaper at Amazon!

I am not sure this is your issue, but, the camera won't focus if its too dark and if what it is pointing at is a solid color or you are to close to the subject. Welcome.

Maybe it's something as simple as switching the lens from MF to AF!

Take a good look through the manual, and follow the various sections. Perhaps set the camera to P mode initially, and make sure the lens is set to AF (Auto focus). Good luck.

Good advice...

Kate, get a good book on your camera; I found the Canon 60D manual basically useless for a new digital shooter. It give you a lot of good information on what the camera can do, but not enough why, when and how to use what function to its best advantage.

Most of the newer cameras will not focus without the camera being powered up, in other words the lens will not focus without power.

It is for some who haven't bought a camera in decades.

I haven't had a camera since 1980 that could work completely manually. Even the Nikon F3 was stuck on 1/80 second with no meter, when the battery went dead.

As someone who works for a Japanese company, we refer to it as "Japenglish". When it starts sounding natural, that is the time to be concerned.
