I have the Vello Shutterboss too, and it work fine except when you forget to check the batteries and you get to your shoot and find them dead. That is why you'd be better off with a wired shutter release. I don't have one yet, but it's up there on my list of things to buy.

Some of the reviews on Amazon say that the wire for the three prong attachment is very loose and sometimes won't fire or stay in the socket. Any Comments on that?

I've gotten several generic remotes from Amazon for just a few dollars. They look identical to the Nikon model and work just as well.

When you get one, consider attaching a removable cord to it. I drilled a tiny hole in the battery holder. I can carry it around my neck when I'm doing a lot of remote shooting. The one in the picture has a shorter cord. I generally use a longer one with a quick disconnect.

Thanks Jerry

No, you can use PWs as a shutter release with the right cable. I have the Flex 5 system and the cable, but usually use that system for my multiple flashes. Vello works as well and is a cheaper option if you don't have PW's.

OK thanks but I think pocket wizards are very expensive are they not?

Have you considered a CamRanger? You can get one in like new condition on eBay for about $200. It has a lot of capability including tethered wireless shooting to Lightroom. Just depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

Thanks Todd. I will definitely take a look at that

Canon has a remote shutter release that you can plug into a Pocket Wizzard for the longest range of them all. I use them to shoot HDR in AEB mode on top of a 30' Manfrotto tripod for aerial real estate, large group shots, and sunset shots above the tree lines. It works on all of my Canon cameras.

Didn't know there was a such thing as a 30 foot tripod. Are you serious?

I use a Vello FreeWave Plus Wireless Remote Shutter Release.
I like it.

How does that compare to the shutter boss II?

I have a cheap Flashpoint Intervalometer ($19.95), that I use on my 5D M II and 5D MIII and has been reliable for 6 years. It is at the same time a remote release that works at a distance up to 300 feet!

jdubu, I also own a couple of Pocket Wizards, I will check out the other devices you mentioned. Thank you.

You can't beat a Pocket Wizzard. Stay with those no matter what the vintage. I use them to fire electric 25 year old light banks and modern battery powered speed lights at the same time for strobist photography.

For photographing wildlife you can be hundreds of yards away--they never fail. I have 6, picking them up used from EBay and Craig's List for cents in the dollar.

Mine seems to be a snug fit and I've never had it fall out. I think you're good there. About the only thing I can think of is that if it's used every single day then it could loosen up over time. But mine doesn't get that much use.

Hello potoman150, I have been reading, enjoying and learning from the digest for well over a year and I registered today so that I could add a reply to your question. I also shoot with a Canon (5D MarkIII) and I had been searching for a wireless remote when I discovered the Pulse. The pulse wireless remote by Alpine Laboratories works with iPhone, iPad or android devices by downloading their app. You can view thumbnails and make ISO, aperture and shutter speed adjustments from your device and fire away. I have used the pulse a few times and so far very pleased. The pulse sells for $99.00 and is rechargeable. Check it out at

Get them for $1 on eBay, or download an app on your phone for free.
