I have a Canon 1D Mark II and a 5D Mark II.

Can anyone tell me which canon wireless remote shutter release works for both cameras?

I would also consider a third-party remote if it's reliable.

I use a Vello FreeWave Plus Wireless Remote Shutter Release.

I have a cheap Flashpoint Intervalometer ($19.95), that I use on my 5D M II and 5D MIII and has been reliable for 6 years. It is at the same time a remote release that works at a distance up to 300 feet!

I have a Vello Shutter Boss II. Does Single shot, multiple shot, Bulb, Timer, and Time-Lapse.

As far as I know, the Canon branded wireless release is line of sight IR only. Really unreliable in sunlight and no way of knowing if it actually activated the shutter if you are any distance away from the camera. I just saw they do have a new wireless remote that is RF, but at $680 list, not for me.

I have used different off brand releases. The Vello Freewave Plus works really well and I use it frequently without any misfires.

I use pocket wizards. You can set them up so you can hold one in your hand to use as a remote.

Oh I thought pocket wizards for for wireless flash triggers. Correct me if I'm wrong.

No, you can use PWs as a shutter release with the right cable. I have the Flex 5 system and the cable, but usually use that system for my multiple flashes. Vello works as well and is a cheaper option if you don't have PW's.

I've gotten several generic remotes from Amazon for just a few dollars. They look identical to the Nikon model and work just as well.

When you get one, consider attaching a removable cord to it. I drilled a tiny hole in the battery holder. I can carry it around my neck when I'm doing a lot of remote shooting. The one in the picture has a shorter cord. I generally use a longer one with a quick disconnect.

Have you considered a CamRanger? You can get one in like new condition on eBay for about $200. It has a lot of capability including tethered wireless shooting to Lightroom. Just depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend.

Best,

Canon has a remote shutter release that you can plug into a Pocket Wizzard for the longest range of them all. I use them to shoot HDR in AEB mode on top of a 30' Manfrotto tripod for aerial real estate, large group shots, and sunset shots above the tree lines. It works on all of my Canon cameras.

I too, use the Vello Freewave. I have one for each of my cameras but could have just gone with one and gotten the different connector wires for each. I have labeled each of the Frewaves and their "wireless" releases so that I know which release goes with which Vello.. It also keeps me from tripping all cameras with one release. I've had the releases for 4 or 5 years and used them fairly often (especially for lunar eclipses, meteor showers, etc.) and the have only had to change the batteries once in each set. I do try to remember to change the batteries in the releases at the same time I do the controller so that I'm sure all are good.

I, too, use Vello Freewave Plus. I have two in each camera case and I have used them every day for several years, every day that I am working. They are cheap and reliable, $60-$70 from B&H.

I got two of the Canon radio triggers ten years ago, I think they were about $400 back then. After several months I and the other photographer using one went back to wired releases. If anyone would like a collection of wire releases for Canon (Canon, Hahnel, Vello, etc.) get in touch with me. I'll send you a bucket of them.

I have no doubt the Pocket Wizards and other top brands work well, but I am very happy with Vello. A remote release is critical for my work and style of shooting.
