I am a grinder. By grinder I mean just a guy that loves photography and have loved it all my life.My equipment is sparse and in almost all cases entry level. Not a complaint but a fact of life. Kids, college, weddings, all came first. Photography is a passion but in most cases comes lower on the list of must haves. I watch posts on UHH and almost daily people ask for this vs that and seem to think this will make them better. What makes you better is practice and knowledge of the equipment you have. My lenses are kit lenses. My camera an entry level DSLR. My enjoyment has been and is over the top. I love what I do. I love getting better. I love the knowledge. So for all you people out there who think the equipment will make you better. Nope it's practice, read, understand. That's what makes you better.

Again, you completely missed my point. Read the posters original statement.

Better equipment alone does not make you better unless you know to use it to advantage.

I ask those that believe equipment does not matter how many cameras have you tried.

How many cameras do you presently have...

How many lenses...

Have a flash...

Filters...

Well if you said you have one camera with one lens, no accessories and you are completely satisfied with the images you take then I believe you are sincere...so much for the rest of you.

These are words of encouragement for me due to financial restrictions. I will have to use my kit lens and focus on my knowledge and skills for a while before I can upgrade to better gear.
Great picture and thank you. I spent the last couple days trying to figure out what I could sell to get an 85 mm prime lens that a salesman convinced me I needed.
I think I will go play with my camera to see what I can make it do with what I have for awhile longer.

Given what paramaters, Ched? Tell me, are you more liable to get a good photo shooting a burst with the D5 or with the D3400? Are you more likely to get a good photo under low light conditions with the D5 or the D3400. Now, if you're just going to take one shot with each using the same settings during good lighting....you're probably right.
Thanks for proving my point. OMG, I can't believe how a statement can get so convoluted. If your a professional sports photographer, get a high end DSLR like the D5. If your just taking random family photo's, any entry level will do. Under the right light conditions, the photo's will look just as good as a high level DSLR.

Applause to you. I wish we heard this message more often. The endless quest for new equipment seems to victimize us. You make me remember my [broke] college days,
when we were resourceful out of need, using acetate sheets to filter, shooting through drinking glasses for creative effects, etc. It seems I was more creative then.

No SS is 100% right! There's one hell of a difference between a "camera enthusiast" and someone that is a photographer. If you shoot BIF (birds in flight) just for those that pretend they don't know what that is even after years of seeing that day after day, and you are looking at shots from other photographers and wonder how can they do that. Well 6 or 7 FPS (frames per second) is nice, 14 is so much better and for sports it is almost a necessity. Yes I played with a pinhole camera but a 600 mm f4/.0 lens so much safer in photographing a Grizzly Bear out in the wild then trying to get close enough to get a good shot with a cell phone. You can be happy with being an enthusiast all your life or as you advance and you find your niche you will want or need better gear so in the end it is the equipment. Just so you know I got started in this hobby in 1954 and it has paid my bills for over half my life.

This is unbelievable, the original poster comes up with a simple statement and everybody tries to make rocket science out of it. Oh! by the way RRS...thanks for giving me your life's story.

Where the OP generalizes their individual experience with some limited types of photography to every photographer and type of photography with this statement:

"So for all you people out there who think the equipment will make you better. Nope it's practice, read, understand."

There is no arguing with your logic. Practice makes perfect, however, advances in equipment can add greater flexibility and expanded capability to your skills. I do a lot of low light night photography. My D1x was plagued with noise. My D4s handles these condition. Shadow definition is much better. It takes practice with the new gear also.

The old story is the Woman that invited a photographer over for dinner . She said you're a very good photographer you must have a good camera. The photographer said thank you you're a very good cook you must have a good stove.

I do film, and have done so since 1954. I find it strange that there always seem to be lots of complex problems that those with digital equipment have. My problem came about when, at 85 years of age, I could no longer hold my Praktica MTL50 with 40-105 macro zoom screw mount lens and a flash that needed 4 heavy batteries steady. I take mostly closeup pictures of flowers at gardens and flower shows. So what to do? I mounted my (classic) Pentax SMC Takumar 50mm 1.4 lens with a #2 closeup filter and created a fake macro lens. Of course you lose infinity with this setup. I diffuse my flash with one thickness of a white hanky (an ancient diffusion method). I think of myself as a photographer, but as to whether my equipment made me so I would have to say yes, but with a little help from me along the way. (Geez, what an ego!)

KK, can you support that claim with some kind of FACT that is not purely conjecture? I sure hope so!
