The camera is still programmed by the photographer the camera can’t do it alone. So the photographer DOES take the picture.

What is it that is programmed by the photographer??? I don't think I heard correctly.

At least we can't blame it on Kodachrome.

A camera, a “thing” that is unable to do anything without an operator, or in this case the photographer.

You are correct. Those that spend $3000.00 and up for a camera have to try to justify the expense. For amateur photographers it is mostly bragging rights. They attempt in their mind to think a new camera will automatically take better pictures. How many photographers do not have any clue about the basics of photography? The photographer takes the photo, not the camera.

Oh yes! Without a camera you don 't have photographer!

So true, but I do have all my files stored on several computers and I would much rather have a camera available to me so I can be creative. I can't sing or paint so the camera is my tool of choice. I guess I'm one of those that feels that a better camera is needed. After years of doing BIF, eagles, with a Hasselblad 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 film camera my keeper rate was very small. What a difference a Canon 1DXMKII makes at 14 FPS not to mention the 600mmf/4.0. I learned photography first and also learned that equipment can and does make one hell of a difference in the hands of a photographer that knows how to use it. After each photo outing I critique what I've done and actually will make notes on what and how I will try to do different and hopefully a better approach the next time out. I may be old but I do try and learn something new every day. One of the things that I really like about this site is all the links that members provide.

But as I get older I am a little dubious about that.

Of course your keeper rate is going to improve. You are using the right gear for the job. That is not what we/I are saying I don’t think.

I’m not talking about you specifically, but all those extra keepers? Are they work of art or are they just more snapshots? Why is it that we very rarely hear these same guys talking about bettering our skills to really improve our shots?

Btw, how did those early photographers snap those amazing shots in the past with 1fps cameras with all manual controls? Do you think it was their skills/talent/vision that produced those winners?

Yes, it was their skill and talent. Skill, talent & Vision will always trump technology.

Really? How many BIF shots did AA do or action sport shots. How much time did AA spend in the darkroom to achieve the finished results. Why do people keep selling technology short? Learn to use and embrace technology. It does take skill and knowledge to master technology. If someone gave you a sports car with 850 HP and you didn't know how to drive it wouldn't do you much good but if you did learn how to drive you could kick ass. This subject is almost as dumb as which came first, the chicken or the egg.

SS did post some of his pictures and they are good and it's very true he has good cameras. Who said that it's not true?

I could be wrong, but I think what is being said is not that the equipment doesn’t matter, but that the latest and greatest is not going to necessarily make you a better photographer. Which is evident by those many snapshots provided in the gallery. I mean try to take a picture of a chickadee with an ultra wide angle lens.

You mean taking a picture of a chickadee with an ultra wide angle lens is frowned upon.......who knew????
