Yes, there is a setting and it is in the Preferences Pane under "External Editing" and near the bottom of the panel, make sure that "Stack with original" is checked.
I have noticed in LR that, after using a plugin, the TIF file is usually reimported and the file shows up in filename order, but occasionally LR decides to change the sort order to "Custom Order," which I then have to undo in order to see the modified file along with the original(s). For all of my plugins, Stack with Original is checked. Very annoying when it happens.

As others have noted, the sort order is what determines where the photos are placed in the list.
In grid mode, the sort order is displayed below the grid display and has a drop-down box with the choices. On my version of LR whenever I add photos to the catalog the sort order is automatically set to "added order", which is not my choice. I generally reset it to "capture time" or sometimes "file name". Since the date/time of the photo is included in my file names either of those choices works for me. The sort order stays on my choice until I add more photos, at which time it is reset to "added order" and I have to reset it.
When it's set to "added order", any externally edited photo is placed at the end since it was added to the list later.
The sort order is only available when you're looking at the grid. To get to grid mode just hit the "G" key (not case sensitive).
