I carry around a couple cheap round rubber jar openers. They have always worked.

It is important that you not take advantage of "search" at the top of the UHH page... you may find that the same question has been ask too many times before.

Jerry41 gave the best answer involving the "Myth Busters" where they use a bandsaw to cut into the filter!!! I assume you wish to save the filter and that destroying the lens and camera is OK?

In the mean time many good meaning people will waste their time when a simple search would have given you 1001 opinions. Future advise I give is use high melt point paraffin as a lube for filters. Check Candle Making for this material. No vapor oils [VOCs] to redeposit on glass.

place a wide rubber band around it and try removing it.

The rubber band should be a staple to your camera bag.

Order a set of filter wrenches from B&H or Adorama the kit includes wrenches for all size filters. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1193242-REG/ice_mwset4_52_58mm_62_72mm_72_86mm_and.html

I had the same problem. Took it to a lady that repaired high end cameras. She trained in Japan. She told me Americans are too rough and use too much pressure. Too much pressure bends the shape of the ring and makes it harder to remove. Just use very gentle pressure and it should come off easily. Mine did.

Through trial and error I came to the same conclusion in the past. Used as little pressure with my fingers as possible to turn the filter and it came off despite multiple prior failed attempts. To avoid this when installing a filter don't tighten it, just turn it until it makes contact and exhibits the tiniest amount of resistance. I did buy a set of filter wrenches after this experience but have never had to use them.

Buy yourself a set of “filter wrenches”. They’re cheap and well worth it.

But make sure you get a size that fits your filter.

I do have one of these. But I also found that a large rubber band works well. No. Don't touch that can of WD40 LOL.

I have used shoelace and small pliers with success.

One of my filters has a two small notches in the rim where you can insert a narrow blade such as kitchen knife so the filter can easily unscrewed.
If your filter does not have these notches you could cut a couple exactly opposite each using a junior hacksaw and cut your own, be careful you do not touch the glass though.

This won’t work on a CPL as the front element rotates.

Get a filter wrench. Surprisingly, try squeezing the least to try to turn it, even with just your finger. Deforming it makes it harder to un-thread. You might also try tapping it all around the edges carefully. A temperature change might help, but don't damage a lens (and camera) over a filter. But best is a filter wrench.
