Buy yourself a set of “filter wrenches”. They’re cheap and well worth it.

https://smile.amazon.com/Camera-Filter-67mm-86mm-Filters-Package/dp/B005649MM2/ref=sr_1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1507383499&sr=1-10&keywords=Filter+wrench

But make sure you get a size that fits your filter.

Warm it up with a hair dryer - I've had the same problem and it almost always works :)

Try a pipe wrench. Guaranteed to remove the filter and the entire front lens

I spent weeks trying to get a stuck filter off a lens, using many of the suggestions already mentioned, but with no success. A tool that will be useful in your kitchen (reuse) finally did the trick: OXO Good Grips Jar Opener. I ordered from Amazon although the OXO brand exists in Target and other stores but maybe not this specific tool.

Sounds like a great idea but since the grips are metal won"t this damage the cpl filter plastic serrations? vs plastic grips. Thanks!

Unsure which suggestion this is pointed to ... Regarding the OXO tool, it has a silicone cover for the jar (lens) so that it's not metal on plastic in use.

Wrap a rubber band around the base and turn! Needs to be very close to the lens otherwise you just turn the Polaroid element. Always works for me!

My pleasure!

I keep a selection of rubber bands in my gear bag all the time!

In most cases, a rubber band will do the trick. For really stubborn filters that require a better grip and additional torque, I use a rubber jar opener, which one can typically find at dollar stores. I have yet to come across a stuck filter that the rubber jar opener couldn't handle!

Amazing! As I was browsing the Photography Forum I was wondering whether I should pose a question of how to remove a CPF from my Sigma 150-600mm lens which I was unable to remove, when I saw your post.I tried a wide rubberband and it worked. Thanks!!!!

One of my filters has a two small notches in the rim where you can insert a narrow blade such as kitchen knife so the filter can easily unscrewed.
If your filter does not have these notches you could cut a couple exactly opposite each using a junior hacksaw and cut your own, be careful you do not touch the glass though.
